Mount Emei is one of the four great Buddhist holy sites in China. Lying on the mountainside as if watching over it is the Leshan Giant Buddha, a World Heritage Site in China. It is the tallest in the world at 71m, and its head alone is 14.7m, comparable to the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple in Nara. This area was once a key transportation point on the river, but was plagued by flooding, and the head priest of Ryounji Temple at the time, who could not bear to see it, carried out this flood control project as a prayer for safety. This project was funded solely by donations from the people, and took more than 90 years to complete. You can descend the 173-step walkway that spans the cliff next to the Great Buddha and stand at the foot of the Great Buddha. However, it is prohibited to walk there at night. During the day, it is crowded with tourists, but if you go to the temple, you can see the Great Buddha from the top of the mountain.
