Myoshinji Temple

Painted by the Edo period genius painter Kano Tan'yū at the age of 55, this "Ceiling Dragon" is the best in Kyoto in terms of scale, power, and vividness. Myoshinji Temple, one of Kyoto's largest temples, is the head temple of the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. It has 46 sub-temples, including Ryoanji Temple, which is famous for its rock garden, and more than 3,000 branch temples around the world. It is said that the number of monks enrolled there exceeds 6,000.
