Kyoto Scenic Spot | Tofukuji Temple Main Temple Garden "Hasso Garden"

The Honbo Garden (the abbot's garden) of Tofuku-ji Temple is a dry landscape garden, and is called the "Garden of the Eight Phases" because of the Buddhist doctrine of "the Eight Phases of Enlightenment". The gardens are divided into four directions: east, south, west and north. They were all built in the 1930s and use gravel, stones, moss and trees to create different landscape combinations. The most famous is the North Garden, which is a checkered pattern of stones and mosses.
