Travel experience of Koriyama, Japan: the simple charm of a small town in the northeast

#JanuaryGoodPlaces2025 This time I came to Koriyama in Fukushima Prefecture. I originally just wanted to stop by, but I didn't expect to discover the unique charm of this city. Koriyama is not as bustling and prosperous as Tokyo or Kyoto, but because of this, its tranquility and simplicity make people feel the real daily life in Japan. First sight of Koriyama: a combination of city and nature I took the Shinkansen to Koriyama Station. The area around the station was more lively than I had imagined, with complete commercial facilities, but if I walked a little further, I could feel the leisurely atmosphere of the city. The air in Koriyama in winter is fresh, the streets are not crowded, and the mountains in the distance are covered with snow, giving the whole city a healing feel. Rich in natural attractions: Lake Inawashiro and Mt. Bandai This time I went to Lake Inawashiro, the fourth largest lake in Japan. In winter, the lake reflects the snowy scenery of Mount Bandai, which is as beautiful as a postcard! If you come here in winter, you can also see flocks of swans spending the winter there. It is particularly therapeutic to watch them floating quietly on the lake. In summer, this place is suitable for water activities or camping. Mount Bandai is a paradise for mountaineering enthusiasts. Although I didn't challenge it this time due to lack of time, I saw many ski resorts along the way and felt that it would be great to ski there in winter. If it is autumn, the red leaves here are even more amazing! History and Culture: Daanchang Historic Park If you are interested in history, Daanchang Historic Park is also worth a visit. This is one of the largest ancient tombs in the Tohoku region. You can learn about the ancient Japanese lifestyle and experience making magatama (ancient ornaments) yourself. Local food: Must-try Fukushima ramen When you come to Fukushima Prefecture, you must try Kitakata ramen. Although Kitakata City is the authentic birthplace, the ramen restaurants in Koriyama are also of high quality. I went to eat at the famous local "Menya Osuka". Their soy sauce ramen soup is refreshing and not greasy, and paired with handmade thick noodles, it is simple but very layered. In addition, Fukushima's fried pork cutlet rice bowl (ソースカツ丼) is also recommended. The crispy fried pork cutlet is paired with sweet and salty sauce, which is super satisfying! Summary: A Northeastern city worth savoring slowly Koriyama may not be a popular tourist city, but its natural beauty, history, culture and food make people feel the simple and authentic Japanese style. If I had the chance to come back, I would like to try the hiking trails on Mount Bandai or enjoy the cherry blossoms in full bloom in the spring. For travelers who like to avoid the crowds and experience local life, Koriyama is definitely a place worth visiting!
