At that time, during Japan's Edo period, castles were being constructed throughout the country, and Kochi Castle was born in this context. Yamauchi Kazutoyo was determined to create a strong and magnificent castle to demonstrate the power of the Tosa Domain. He assembled numerous skilled craftsmen and invested significant manpower and resources, taking several years for Kochi Castle to take its initial shape. Over the centuries since its completion, Kochi Castle Keep has weathered countless storms. It witnessed the prosperity of the Tosa Domain and experienced the smoke and fire of war. During the Meiji Restoration, Japanese society underwent tremendous changes, and many castles were demolished or abandoned. Kochi Castle Keep was fortunate to survive. However, a major fire in 1727 dealt it a heavy blow, destroying most of the structure. Fortunately, the local people and government cherished it greatly and quickly launched reconstruction efforts, following the original style and layout to restore the keep to its former glory. The keep we see today, though not in its original form, still retains a rich historical atmosphere. Narrow stairs and small windows were important defensive designs at the time. The steep and winding stairs made it difficult for enemies to climb quickly during attacks. The small windows provided a good view for observation while minimizing the target area for enemy attacks. Ascending to the top floor of the keep, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Kochi City. The distant mountains stretch into the distance, contrasting with the modern buildings in the city, presenting a unique picture of the fusion of history and modernity.
