Macun Brick Carved Tomb｜Tour of Ancient Buildings in Southern Shanxi

🌈Highlights: The Macun Brick Carved Tombs🪦 are the tombs of the Duan family during the Song and Jin Dynasties. They are located in Macun, the western suburb of Jishan County. There are a total of 14 tombs🪦, and 9 of them have been excavated and opened. The Macun Brick Tombs are located on a small hill. This hill never accumulates snow even when it snows every year. It has always been regarded as a mysterious place by the locals. After the villagers discovered the tombs during land reclamation in 1973, the mystery of the lack of snow was revealed. The Duan family was engaged in the Chinese herbal medicine business and was a wealthy local family during the Song and Jin Dynasties, so the tomb chamber was built very gorgeously. To enter the tomb passage, one needs to walk up dozens of steps from the ground, and then turn into a long corridor. Each tomb chamber is connected to a branch line of the corridor. The entrance to the tomb chamber is very small, and one needs to hunch over and enter sideways. The tomb chamber is mainly decorated with the tomb platform and brick carvings around it. The brick carvings in each tomb chamber here are very exquisite, and they are all carved with life scenes of the tomb owner before his death, including opera performances, flowers and plants, banquets and entertainment, etc. The entire tomb chamber is like the courtyard where the tomb owner lived during his lifetime, with a dome ceiling, front yard, back yard, left and right wing rooms, etc. The brick carving in the center of each tomb is a door, some of which are still painted in red. The most famous one is that the door of one of the tombs is slightly open, and a woman sticks half of her body out from the edge of the door, which vividly expresses the connection between another world🌍 and the world of the tomb. 🚗Address and transportation: It takes about 20 minutes to drive from Jishan County to the entrance of the scenic spot. There is a large open space for parking at the entrance. Next to the scenic spot is Qinglong Temple. The murals in the temple are very beautiful, but when I went there, the murals had just begun to be repaired.
