"Shinshu Iiyama Kamakura no Sato" in Iiyama City, Nagano Prefecture is a 15-minute drive north from Iiyama Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line, in the Outer Region, a region of rice fields surrounded by mountains. It is one of Japan's leading snow-filled areas, covered in snow for about four months of the year. In this pure white snowy field, more than 20 large kamakuras are lined up, making it a winter feature of the snow country of Iiyama. Inside the kamakuras, you can eat "Noroshinabe" (a hot pot dish) filled with plenty of local ingredients such as vegetables, mushrooms, and Kitashinshu Miyuki pork. The weekday-only snack plan includes sweet red bean soup and baked sweet potatoes. You can also play in the snow with snowcats, snowmobiles, and sleds, so your children will enjoy it too. This is a hidden gem that can only be reached by bus, taxi, or car. You need studless tires to get there, but it is relatively easy to get to as the snow is well cleared and it is not a mountain road!
