How to Enjoy the Ancient Capital of Hue, Vietnam

When it comes to central Vietnam, Da Nang and Hoi An are often the most famous destinations. However, the ancient capital of Hue is also highly recommended! Located about a two-hour drive from Da Nang, Hue is a city worth exploring at a leisurely pace to fully enjoy its sights and cuisine, rather than just a quick day trip. Hue was once the seat of Vietnam's last dynasty, the Nguyen Dynasty. The city is home to the Imperial City, Thien Mu Pagoda, Khai Dinh Tomb, and five other structures that are collectively recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites under the "Complex of Hue Monuments." The Perfume River flows between the new and old quarters of the city. As you enter the old quarter, you'll immediately come across the Imperial City of Hue. The Imperial City itself is vast and offers plenty to see! If you have the time, spending half a day to thoroughly explore it is highly recommended. The architecture is a blend of Vietnamese and Chinese cultures, with ornate and dazzling decorations. The cannons, said to represent the five elements of Chinese philosophy—wood, fire, earth, metal, and water—are particularly impressive and were designed to protect the Imperial City. If you visit between May and June, you can also enjoy the lush lotus leaves and beautiful gardens. I visited in May, during the season of fresh greenery, and I still remember how rejuvenated I felt by the vibrant natural surroundings. However, even during this time of year, the weather can be quite hot. During the dry season, temperatures rise even higher, so I recommend bringing sunscreen, a hat, and a parasol for your sightseeing. After exploring the Imperial City, take a break at a nearby café famous for its "salt coffee." This unique coffee is said to have originated in Hue, and it's especially delightful after a long walk. Salt coffee features a layer of salted cream atop traditional Vietnamese coffee. While it is generally sweet, I, being a fan of bitter flavors, opted to add an extra shot of espresso. The balance of sweetness and saltiness is exquisite, making it an addictive treat!
