The Romantic Encounter of Ancient Castles and Cherry Blossoms

Himeji Castle, also known as White Heron Castle, is easily accessible. Upon stepping out of the Himeji Station hall, you’ll find yourself facing Otemae Street, a straight main road flanked by wide red-brick pedestrian paths on both sides. Although buses are available to reach Himeji Castle, most visitors prefer a leisurely walk to the castle on pleasant days. It takes about 15–20 minutes to arrive at Otemon (Sakura Gate). On the right side is Otemae Park, while on the left is the Karo Residence Park. During early April’s cherry blossom season, these parks are adorned with stunning floral landscapes. The road is lined with shops, offering delightful scenery and delicious treats along the way, making the stroll truly enjoyable. Crossing the Sakura Gate Bridge over the moat, you’ll enter the castle grounds where visitors gather around the Sannomaru Plaza. The plaza is surrounded by fully bloomed cherry trees, creating a picturesque setting. On the day of the visit, there happened to be a traffic safety awareness event featuring performances by bands, mascots, and children, adding to the lively atmosphere. Other attractions in the vicinity include a zoo, Koko-en Garden, and within the castle grounds, the main keep and Nishinomaru Garden are open for exploration. Spending an entire day here might not be enough to take in all the beauty. During cherry blossom season, every corner of the castle is breathtaking, leaving visitors reluctant to leave.
