Every majestic castle in Japan is often accompanied by a beautiful garden. As one of Japan's five national treasure castles, Hikone Castle is complemented by Genkyuen, a pond strolling garden located nearby. The garden, which draws water from Lake Biwa, showcases a serene and profound beauty. Perhaps due to the lack of visitors or the light drizzle, Genkyuen felt exceptionally tranquil and otherworldly, offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle. From the edge of the pond, you can gaze at Hikone Castle perched on the hill, creating a picturesque scene with the garden's trees, pond, and pavilions. Japanese gardens often feature a traditional tea house, strategically positioned to offer the best views. Genkyuen's tea house, named "Hōshōdai," was once the reception hall for distinguished guests of Hikone Castle. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the garden's eight scenic spots. Naturally, a visit wouldn't be complete without stepping inside for a cup of matcha, savoring the privilege of being treated like an honored guest. This visit took place during the early summer season, when fresh greenery was in full bloom. Though there were no cherry blossoms or autumn foliage, the garden's charm under the overcast skies and light rain was poetic in its own way.
