Haikou Qilou Old Street.

Haikou Qilou Old Street is a historical and cultural district of Qilou buildings, covering an area of 80,500 square meters. Most Qilou buildings are two or three stories high, with the tallest being five stories. The facade is divided into three sections: the lower section is a colonnade, the middle section is the floor, and the upper section is a parapet. For commercial and residential use, most buildings have a "front shop and back residence" or "lower shop and upper residence" layout. The Western colonial movement led to the formation of the Qilou architectural dissemination circle. After the Qilou architectural form was initially formed in India, it was introduced to the Malay Peninsula with Western colonial expansion, and spread to Guangzhou, Haikou, and Taiwan along three maritime routes with the Malay Peninsula as the node. The formation and initial scale of Haikou Qilou Old Street is directly related to Hainanese overseas Chinese. In 1924, the brigade commander of the First Army of the Guangdong Army invited many overseas Chinese to return to their hometowns to invest in housing construction in order to improve urban planning. The return of overseas Chinese from Southeast Asia not only brought back financial capital, but also Western advanced architectural culture. It can be said that overseas Chinese from Southeast Asia are a powerful driving force for the emergence and development of Qilou architecture.
