During the Republic of China period, Xinhepu was a gathering place for overseas Chinese, wealthy businessmen and politicians. Almost every villa has a story of a prominent family or a famous politician💫 The small villas in Dongshan are Western European retro buildings, called "Dongshan Western Buildings", especially in Xinhepu area, which are concentrated in clusters. They were built in the 1920s and 1930s and are mainly used for residential purposes. The most representative ones are the five major overseas Chinese gardens: Chunyuan, Kuiyuan, Jianyuan, Mingyuan, and Yuyuan. Chunyuan may seem inconspicuous, but it was once the seat of the CPC Central Committee. In 1923, the CPC Central Committee moved from Shanghai to Guangzhou. Chen Duxiu, Cai Hesen, Li Dazhao, Mao Zedong, Qu Qiubai, Zhang Tailei, Luo Zhanglong, Xiang Jingyu and others have lived here. Xinhepu Road, which has a century-old history, is filled with the literary and artistic atmosphere of the Republic of China💫 In August 1993, the former site of Chunyuan was listed as a cultural relic protection site in Guangzhou, and was restored from the original in 2006.
