UNESCO World Heritage Site

#2月好去地方2025 On July 7, 2008, George Town in Penang, Malaysia was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Now, almost 17 years after its inclusion in the World Heritage List, we take a closer look at how this old port city became a world-renowned cultural heritage. The rise of George Town is related to its historical background as an important trading port on the East-West Waterway in the 19th century. The booming economy and post-war rent controls on old buildings have allowed George Town to retain the largest collection of historic buildings in Malaysia today, and has given rise to a diverse and complex ethnic structure, cultural practices and spatial landscapes. The entrance to the UNESCO site is Armenian Street. At its intersection with Cannon Street, you can see the iconic pagoda-style minaret of Acheen Street Mosque, while on the other side is the famous clan temple Longshan Tang Qiu Gongsi hidden behind the street houses, and the former secret society base Po Fook She Fuk Clan Temple. On the other side is the Tzu Chi Temple and Ye Clan Temple on Datongzai Street (also Armenian Street). The street is filled with centuries-old monuments and new buildings, traditional culture and emerging industries. It's really worth selling!
