Since 1967, full-scale excavation of the castle ruins and samurai residences has been underway, and an area of 2.78 million square meters has now been designated a Special Historic Site. This is the remains of the castle where the fifth head of the Asakura clan, Yoshikage Asakura, lived. In addition to Japan's oldest flower beds, the castle, stables, and storehouses were neatly arranged. The four gardens within the ruins are designated as Special Places of Scenic Beauty by the national government. The typical tour route is from the restored townscape to the Asakura castle ruins, the bathhouse ruins garden, the inner palace ruins, and the Suwa castle ruins garden. It takes about an hour! #Fukui #FukuiTourism #IchijodaniAsakuraClanRuins #ZeroYenTravel2025Autumn

Not easy to get to but well worth the trip if you are into Japanese history and can speak and understand a even a little Japanese. This is the site of a castletown that flourished deep in the mountains and nothing remained. Now there are a number of reconstructed residences and a large portion of the site has been excavated showing pillars, walls, wells, and so forth. A small museum has relics of medieval life. There is a small waterfall called 'Ichijo-daki' deep in the woods, about 3 km from Ichijodani Asakura Ruins. It is quite small waterfalls compared to other waterfalls I’ve visited but definitely worth a visit. #givethanks #givethanks
