Phase — An old town told through markets

Fes El Bali is an ancient city founded in the 9th century. Over 9,000 small alleyways intertwine like a maze. It's filled with markets, spices, leather goods, tanneries, and ancient mosques, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But it's not a stagnant city. Simply put, Fes El Bali is the ancient heart of Fez, a living soul. People still live, trade, and perform rituals here every day. It's not just a preserved "ancient city," but a "living city." We entered the Fez market in the late afternoon. The sun was low, and the shadows of the city walls hung over the narrow alleys, transporting us to another world. The hustle and bustle of business was less bustling than at midday, but the rhythm of life was still pulsing. A captivating sight adorned the streets: huge piles of dates, dark and shiny. Vendors claim this fruit is a staple in every household, especially during Ramadan dinners, when families gather around to break their fast with dates and warm milk. Next, a row of spices and grains. Large canvas bags filled with wheat, barley, and couscous, the aroma of turmeric, cinnamon, and paprika wafted through the freshly baked morning bread, making this small alley even warmer than it appeared. Until we reached a small storefront, we saw a dark green tub of Beldi Soap, a fermented olive product used in hammams. The vendor simply said, "This is our heart." The short sentence, but it seemed to tell us that Fes Market isn't just about commerce; it's also about centuries of life and tradition. As evening approached, the market quieted down. Some vendors began closing their boxes. Children played in the alleys. Laughter mixed with the call to prayer from the mosque. It was the final rhythm of the day, telling us that Fes is alive and well. It's not just an ancient city on a map, but a city with a real heart. #FesElBal #Morroco
