A secluded view of Devonport, Tasmania

The northern gateway to Tasmania, Devonport, was a quiet but charming small port city. The first impression was simple enough to be described as ‘plain’, but the nature and warmth of the people left a deep impression. The harbor scenery of the Spirit of Tasmania ferry arriving and departing created a rhythm unique to this city, and the coastal walk with the gentle sea breeze calmed my mind. When I went out of the city, green hills and rural scenery unfolded, giving me the feeling of encountering the ‘real Tasmania’. Although it is not large, the local cafes and galleries gave me a sense of the region’s identity, and the leisurely atmosphere was impressive enough to make me think of a city where I would want to live rather than a tourist destination.
