Phra That Si Song Rak

The friendship between two lands was established at that time... by jointly constructing the Phra That in Lan Xang art style in 1560 to symbolize their mutual love. It was built on the banks of the Man River, halfway between the Nan and Mekong Rivers, and named 'Phra That Si Song Rak.' This stupa was created as a testament to the mutual assistance between the Ayutthaya Kingdom (during the reign of King Maha Chakkraphat) and the Kingdom of Lan Xang (now Vientiane, the capital of the Lao People's Democratic Republic). Unlike other major temples or those with royal stupas that have resident monks and both Buddhist and monastic areas within the same compound, Wat Phra That Si Song Rak only has a Buddhist area. A notable rule of Phra That Si Song Rak is the prohibition of wearing red clothing.
