While much of the original Islamic structure was preserved, successive Christian rulers altered the building by introducing a soaring cruciform space that rises above the original mosque, disrupting its low, horizontal expanse. The cathedral’s architectural style is an eclectic mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements, reflecting the evolving tastes and ambitions of the Spanish monarchy. The main nave features high vaulted ceilings, ornate plasterwork, and grand altarpieces, creating a striking contrast with the delicate Islamic arches that surround it. The high altar is another focal point. It is adorned with gilded sculptures and large oil paintings, creating a richly ornamented centerpiece that reflects the grandeur of Catholic religious art. Overall, the juxtaposition of the cathedral’s Christian elements with the surrounding Islamic architecture creates a striking visual and symbolic contrast, highlighting the layered history of the site. The admission ticket was priced at 14€, which I found more than worthy.
