Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen

Tivoli Gardens is a famous theme park in Copenhagen, Denmark. It opened on August 15, 1843 and is the second oldest theme park in the world, second only to Bakken Amusement Park near Klammberg. The amusement park was originally called "Kjøbenhavns Tivoli & Vauxhall". [Tivoli] The name comes from the Tivoli Gardens in Paris, the ancestor of the amusement park established in 1795. It was named after the ancient town of Tivoli, 30 kilometers away from Rome, which is famous for its holiday gardens such as Hadrian's Villa, Villa d'Este and Villa Gregory. "Vauxhall" comes from Vauxhall Gardens in London. The founder of Tivoli, George Carstensen (1812-1857), obtained a five-year charter for the creation of Tivoli by telling King Christian VIII that "when the people are entertaining themselves, they do not think about politics." The king gave Carstensen the right to use a fortified embankment of about 15 acres (61,000 m2) outside the west gate for an annual rent of 945 Danish kroner. Thus, until the 1850s, Tivoli was still outside the city, accessible through the West Gate. From the beginning, Tivoli Park has featured a series of fantastic oriental-style buildings: a theater, a bandstand, restaurants and cafes, flower gardens, and mechanical rides such as a carousel and a simple scenic railway.
