Yuzhong District Luohan Temple (Part 2)

Within Luohan Temple, the over 20-meter-long Ancient Buddha Rock houses more than 400 Song Dynasty Buddhist statues carved into the cliff face. These include a reclining Buddha statue (commonly known as the "Sleeping Buddha"), a statue of Guanyin, and statues of patrons, all bearing a striking resemblance to the Dazu Rock Carvings at Baoding Mountain. The Mahavira Hall contains numerous Buddhist art treasures, including statues of the Sixteen Arhats (Buddha's top 16 disciples), a Ming Dynasty bronze statue of the Three Sages of the West, a jade Buddha statue depicting Buddha's enlightenment from Myanmar, and a replica of the Indian mural, "Buddha Leaving the Palace." The temple's scripture depository houses a collection of Buddhist scriptures, including the Tripiṭaka, Sanskrit and Tibetan texts, and ancient calligraphy and paintings, many of which are Tang and Ming Dynasty treasures. The Arhat Hall contains a total of 524 clay Arhat statues. These statues are exquisitely crafted and lifelike, often attracting devotees who count the Arhats to divine their fortunes. The sights within Luohan Temple include the Four Heavenly Kings statues, a Ming Dynasty stele, the Ancient Buddha Rock, the Arhat Hall, Maitreya Pavilion, Mahavira Hall, scripture depository, abbot's quarters, and the meditation hall. The Arhat Hall houses 524 clay Arhat statues, each meticulously crafted with lifelike detail. Devotees often visit to count the Arhats, believing this practice can predict their fortune. A stone tablet dating back to the third year of the Tianqi Emperor's reign in the Ming Dynasty (1623) stands in front of the temple, inscribed with the words "Ancient Site of West Lake." Inside the gate, the stone walls flanking the passageway are known as "Ancient Buddha Rock." Stretching over 20 meters, these walls feature numerous Buddhist relief carvings and are designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection site.
