Worship Buddha, Thai massage | Sampao Temple | Chiang Mai

Wat Sampao is a temple of the Mahanikaya sect. It is located on Ratchadamnoen Road in Si Phum Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai Province. It is opposite Wat Phan On in the moat of Chiang Mai, 250 meters from Tha Pae Gate. Wat Sampao was built during the Mangrai Dynasty. The original name is probably not this. The name of the builder is unknown. At that time, a merchant from Rahaeng City (currently Tak Province) traveled to trade in Chiang Mai. He became devoted to Buddhism and built a golden ship and placed it in the pagoda of this temple. The National Office of Buddhism stated that the temple was established in 2113. Later, in 2362, Phraya Thammalangka, the second ruler of Chiang Mai, came to make merit at the permanent structure, and Chao Suriyawong (Khamtan Siroros) continued to maintain it. Important buildings include the Lanna-style chapel. The building is situated on a raised base with a three-tiered roof. The pediment and pillars are decorated with stucco designs of angels, plants, and various animals. The stairs leading up are Makara and Naga. Inside is the principal Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya posture. The Lanna-style pagoda is located behind the chapel. The lowermost base is square, receiving a raised lotus pedestal. Next up is a five-tiered garland of vines, supporting a golden round bell-shaped body covered with gold leaf. The top is decorated with a five-tiered golden umbrella. The chapel is located on the side of the chapel. The roof is double-layered. The gable is still the original, while the naga sadung is newly made. The front is decorated with stucco designs of plants and colorful glass.
