Tang Xia: dessert’s best hidden treasure!

There’s something about ending a good meal with dessert that just feels right — and that’s exactly what happened after dinner with friends recently. With our sweet tooth suddenly activated, we stumbled upon a charming Chinese dessert shop called Tang Xia (糖夏) in Butterworth, Penang. And let me tell you — this impromptu visit turned out to be a delicious surprise. We decided to try two of their signature items: the Peach Gum Snow Swallow Beancurd and the Black Glutinous Rice Supreme. The Peach Gum Snow Swallow Beancurd was not only pretty to look at, but also packed with nourishing ingredients. It featured beauty-boosting peach gum and snow swallow, both known for their health and skincare benefits. These were paired with silky tofu pudding (douhua), chewy taro balls, and sago. The combination of textures was perfect — soft, bouncy, smooth, and just the right amount of sweetness. Every spoonful felt like a little treat for both the body and soul. Then came the Black Glutinous Rice Supreme, and we were impressed by the portion size. It was hearty and comforting without being overly sweet — exactly how traditional black glutinous rice dessert should be. It had a warm, earthy flavor and a satisfying texture that made it perfect for sharing (though you might not want to!). The overall experience at Tang Xia was wonderful — from the friendly service to the thoughtful presentation of the desserts.
