Portuguese Colonial City 🌆 When big cities like New York and São Paulo were still wastelands, Ouro Preto was the most prosperous city in the Western Hemisphere thanks to the gold rush. The interior of the Baroque-style and later Rococo-style churches⛪️ built at that time is still breathtakingly beautiful [petrified]. The people here are naturally passionate❤️🔥, and whenever I saw my Asian face, I would always get asked, “Where are you from?” followed by a long explanation of colonial history. The stories covered here, such as the status of women and the history of slavery, make it feel like time has stopped. – Unlike us, who have thousands of years of history, Brazil is a young immigrant country, and events that happened only 200 years ago are still considered history. It feels more immersive because it is so close to the present.
