Brasilia (Portuguese: Brasília, Portuguese: [bɾaˈziljɐ] (ⓘ); also translated as Brasilia) is the capital of Brazil and the administrative center of the Federal District. It is located on the Brazilian Plateau at an altitude of 1,158 meters and is also a World Heritage Site listed by UNESCO. Brasilia is the largest city in the world built in the late 20th century. Brasilia was built between 1956 and 1960 as a new town and urban planning. It is also famous for its boldly designed buildings and rapidly growing population. On April 21, 1960, Brazil moved its capital from Rio de Janeiro to Brasilia in order to speed up the development of the inland areas. In 1956, Brazilian President Juscelino Kubitschek (JK) ordered the construction of Brasilia. The chief urban planner was Lúcio Costa, the chief architect for most of the city's public buildings was Oscar Niemeyer - Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida Niemeyer Soares Filho (including the National Congress, the Presidential Palace, the Supreme Court, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Presidential Residence, the Cathedral, etc.), and the landscape architect was Roberto Burle Marx.
