It was built in the 1880s and is one of four fortresses designed by the Kingdom of Prussia to protect Spandau and its ammunition industry. It is hexagonal in shape and buried deep in the Hahneberg mountain, making it barely visible even from a close distance. Today, the fortress's old brick walls, vaults and trenches have completely different inhabitants: Fort Hahneberg is a popular bat colony where many protected species, including Germany's largest bat species, the big-eared mouse-foot bat, spend their summers or hibernate. Some scenes of Quentin Tarantino's 2008 American blockbuster "Inglourious Basterds" were also filmed here. I visited Fort Hahneberg and felt its historical and natural charm. I took a guided tour to learn the details of the construction and use of the fortress, and saw some well-preserved military facilities such as gun emplacements, ammunition depots and ventilation vents. I also walked around the fortress and admired the beautiful scenery and rich vegetation.
