Miaoying Temple was first built in 1279 during the reign of Kublai Khan, Emperor Shizu of the Yuan Dynasty, and was designed and built by the Nepalese craftsman Arniko. It was rebuilt in 1457, the first year of the Tianshun era of the Ming Dynasty. The White Pagoda in the temple, the "Stupa of Shakyamuni Relics," is the oldest Tibetan Buddhist pagoda in China. Except for the bronze canopy and spire, the whole body is snow-white. It is the landmark building of Miaoying Temple, so the temple is also known as the White Pagoda Temple. The shape of the White Pagoda of Miaoying Temple is based on the ancient Indian stupa style, and it is built with the unique Nepalese covered bowl-shaped pagoda shape. The temple faces south and covers an area of about 13,000 square meters, consisting of the main courtyard and the pagoda courtyard. The Shanmen Gate, Bell and Drum Tower, Hall of Heavenly Kings, Great Enlightenment Hall, Hall of Seven Buddhas, and Pagoda Courtyard are arranged in order on the central axis. Miaoying Temple houses many Buddhist cultural relics and works of art. The most representative cultural relics include the Tripitaka, a wooden statue of Guanyin, a patched kasaya, a Five-Buddha Crown, Emperor Qianlong's handwritten "Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra," the Tibetan "Zun Sheng Curse," bronze statues of the Three Buddhas, and a red-gold relic of the Longevity Buddha, which were preserved on the top of the White Pagoda in 1753, the eighteenth year of the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty.
