Temple No. 76: Thewaratkuncharoenworawihan Temple

Wat Thewaratkuncharoen Worawihan, originally believed to be Wat Samo Kraeng, was built in the Ayutthaya period. It is assumed that the name Samo comes from the Samo tree that grows scattered within the temple. While some groups believe that the word Samo may have been distorted from the Khmer word Thamo, which means stone, and Samo Kraeng, which means hard stone. Later, during the reign of King Rama I, the temple underwent a major renovation by Somdet Phra Bowonratchachao Maha Sura Singhanat and Somdet Phra Samphanthawong Ther Chao Fa Krom Luang Phithaksamontri, the sons of Her Royal Highness Princess Krom Phra Sisudarak, the elder sister of King Rama I, who was the progenitor of the Montrikul family, respectively.
