The Red Mountain Temple Grottoes in Baiyin, Gansu

According to the stone stele in the Red Mountain Temple, the grottoes were carved and Buddha statues were made during the Northern Wei Dynasty. They were renovated during the Song Dynasty. The local villagers expanded the grottoes and built the Great Buddha Hall during the Ming Dynasty. In the twelfth year of Wanli (1584), the grottoes were reopened and it took more than ten years to complete. Inside the grottoes, there are three Buddha statues of the Three Worlds, six Dharma Protectors, known as Kaiyuan Temple. In the second year of Qianlong (1822), it was renovated again. During the "Cultural Revolution", the statues and the door of the hall in the grottoes were all destroyed. After 1983, the local villagers raised funds to repair them, and the statues and the door of the hall have been restored. On September 13, 1936, Peng Dehuai led the Western Expedition Army to meet at Dalachi, and the headquarters was set up in the Great Buddha Hall of the Red Mountain Temple. Therefore, the grottoes were listed as a provincial cultural relics protection site in Gansu, with extremely high cultural research value.
