Rock Star of the Picos, Urriellu Magic

#summervacay Urriellu, or Picu Urriellu if you wanna sound local, is an absolute legend in the Picos de Europa. It’s this towering chunk of limestone that just pops out of the mountains like it’s showing off. You see it from a distance and you’re like, “Yup, that’s the one.” It’s especially famous with climbers, but honestly, even just hiking near it is amazing. The trek to the base is no joke but super doable if you’re into trails and don’t mind a bit of a climb. The route from the Sotres area or through Bulnes gives you epic scenery, rolling green hills, rocky paths, the occasional cow, classic Asturias energy. Once you reach the Refugio de Urriellu, it’s all about chilling, staring at the peak, and feeling tiny in the best way. Even if you’re not summiting, just being near this rock feels special. There’s a real “you earned this” vibe at the top. Pack snacks, wear good shoes, and soak up the mountain silence.
