Roman Theater - the most magnificent sight

The Roman Theater is one of the most magnificent sights in Amman. The tilted and sloping theater has incredible acoustics, is cleverly designed and can accommodate approximately 6,000 people. Visitors are easily surprised by the immense space and the thought of crowds gathering here nearly 2,000 years ago. Visitors can see Roman influence everywhere in Amman. As you walk to the amphitheater, you will walk along the ruins of a Roman street and past the colonnades of the Citadel of Corin. In the fourth century, a market was held in this location between the theater and the street. It is believed that the Roman Theater was built in the second century during the reign of Antoninus Pius. The theater was built on the north side of a hill. This means that the theater has ideal lighting during the day so that sunlight hits the stage but does not reach the audience's eyes. Walk through the side entrances to enter the music bay and onto the stage. Stand in the middle of the stage and listen to your own voice echo throughout the auditorium. The theater's acoustics are excellent. Visitors will find the Museum of Jordanian People's Traditions in the rooms behind the entrance and the Amman Museum of Folk Traditions on the other side. Seating in the theater is divided into three horizontal areas. The highest seat of the theater is called “The Gods”. Behind the seat is a small shrine worshiping the goddess Athena. The Roman theater was rebuilt and is today a place of entertainment and socializing. The two museums charge a nominal admission fee and opening hours vary seasonally. The theater is located on Hashmi Street in central Amman.
