Nezame no toko

Agematsu Town is surrounded by a granite region. The Kiso River carved the terrain, revealing Nezame-no-Toko. The unique cracking of granite has resulted in its mysterious shape, resembling a row of large boxes. Since the Meiji period, the water level of the Kiso River has dropped due to hydroelectric power generation and irrigation water diversion, further accentuating the enormity of the rock. It was designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty in 1923 and has been managed as a prefectural park, but in 2020 it was elevated to Central Alps Quasi-National Park. Another feature of this area is that it is home to the ancient legend of Urashima Taro.
