In the 1960s, the temples were relocated to a new location to save them from being submerged by the rising waters of Lake Nasser, which was created by the construction of the Aswan Dam. $40 million so much money was paid by UNESCO to relocate the Abu Simbel temple complex (in 1960 it was $40 million; adjusted for inflation in 2023 it's approximately $400 million) The relocation of the Abu Simbel temples was a massive undertaking that involved cutting the temples into large blocks, transporting them to a new location, and then reassembling them. The temples were relocated to a new location about 65 meters higher and 200 meters back from the river. This temple is not only incredibly grand but also has an amazing history of rescue.
