The Drift Ice Story train runs along the Sea of Okhotsk

Every year, during drift ice season, the Ryuhyo Iyagi train, which runs along the Sea of Okhotsk coast from Abashiri to Shiretoko-Shari Station, begins its regular service. I was lucky enough to board this train while traveling in Dodo in early March. Although I didn't have a window seat, the view of the drift ice beyond was breathtaking and beautiful beyond words. The train sells various souvenirs, and the conductor's stories are also available. At each stop, you can leisurely enjoy the ocean views, making the 840 yen reserved seat ticket well worth it. I hope those who have traveled on the Aurora Icebreaker will enjoy this train, reminiscing about the drift ice and leaving Shiretoko-Shari Station with even more memories and emotions. #OverseasTravel

Abashiri

If you’re heading to Berkeley and craving authentic Japanese flavors, I’ve got the inside scoop on where to go for next-level izakaya eats! 🍶🍣 Must-See (and Eat!) Spot: Don’t miss Sakanatei Kihachi, tucked away in Abashiri—it’s not just an izakaya, it’s an EXPERIENCE. Make sure you hit up this spot, especially if you’re a fan of bold seafood. The oysters here are super juicy (seriously, SO fresh!), and the toriyaki is grilled to perfection with that smoky flavor you dream about. Feeling a bit adventurous? Try the whale meat—just know, it’s an acquired taste, and honestly, it wasn’t my favorite. Sakanatei Kihachi Izakaya Address: 2-3-1 Kita 2-jō Nishi, Abashiri, Hokkaido Open: 5pm–11pm (closed Sundays) Travel Tips: Get there early as it fills up fast, especially on weekends! If you’re oyster-obsessed, ask the staff about the catch of the day—they’re happy to share recommendations. How to Get Around: Berkeley is super walkable, and cycling is also huge here. For longer hops, grab a rideshare or use the local buses. Foodie Tip: Save stomach space for their daily specials—they rotate based on what’s wildly fresh! Quick Info: 💸 Payment: Cash and cards accepted 🌦️ Weather: Layers are key—Berkeley does those cool evenings #BerkeleyEats #IzakayaObsessed #SeafoodLovers #TravelHacks #JapanFoodGuide

Cape Notoro-misaki

I visited Cape Notoro in September and had a great experience. The weather was cooling and a bit windy, but overall very good and comfortable. The view of the Sea of Okhotsk with the Notoro Lighthouse is stunning, and on clear days you can see the Shiretoko mountain range. Although the summer flowers were gone, the cape still had a calm charm with early autumn in the air. What makes it even better is that it’s only a short drive from Abashiri town, so it’s very easy to visit without much hassle. #abashiri
