We hired a driver, so parking was super easy and just a 5-minute walk to the lake entrance. Chill vibes all around. Next up: the Panlong Ancient Trail. OMG, this spot is packed with legendary history! The name “Panlong” means “coiled dragon”—the trail is literally shaped like one, with dramatic twists. Legend says ancient travelers who go through this path will have smooth path ahead. There are two trails: big and small. Personally, I prefer the big one and it was totally worth it. Depart from Hankou, pass through Dishuizhai to Wangmangling. Stayed in Xiyagou (tested and found Xiyagou scenery far better, with a stunning cliff-hanging road). So at the fork towards Zhanggou, head directly towards the Ant Ladder direction to Xiyagou (there is a clear fork, one path goes up, the other down, you can ask the supply station staff). The descent is all stairs, making you question your life choices. 2️⃣Day 2: Zhanggou / Xiyagou → Zhoujiapu → Donglian → Xilian → Jiulianshan Grand Canyon → Laolongkou Waterfall → Baligou Scenic Area (about 40km, around 9 hours) Features: Less climbing, easier paths, mostly cliffside trails. Details: The homestay owner took us to Zhoujiapu. From there to Donglian is all cliffside trails with tree cover, so it’s not too scary. Just watch your step and don’t worry too much. (The narrower sections have been repaired.) Between Donglian and Xilian, you can take a keji ride for 15 RMB per person, saving a lot of walking. ⚠️Important tip: After passing Laolongkou Waterfall, the path gets difficult and walking in the dark is very dangerous. Manage your time well! If bringing kids, start early. About transportation: Before departure: Arrange your car in advance, signal is weak in the mountains, set departure and return times. Return: From Laolongkou down to the scenic service center, you can take a sightseeing bus for 30 RMB per person to the service center. Henan is often referred to as "The mother of China" because historians say that Chinese civilization originated in this region. During our stay, we visited The Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, the largest and most impressive collection of Chinese cave carvings from the late Northern Wei and Tang Dynasties. We also visited Shaolin temple, often known as the birthplace of martial arts and Zen Buddhism, and watched masters of kungfu practice their craft. Waterfalls and gardens reachable by high-speed train within 2 hours feel completely different from islands and grasslands you fly to across provinces. Among these 8 places, some offer real cooling mountain scenery, while others rely on early morning and evening by the sea. Don’t schedule your trip like a sunbathing boot camp. 01 Baoting County | Hainan Baoting’s coolness hides in the rainforest, not by the hotel pool. 📍Arrive at Binglanggu Li and Miao cultural tourism area before 9 AM. The tree canopy along the boardwalk filters sunlight into fragments. Kids can watch traditional weaving and dyeing demonstrations and learn about rainforest plants. In July, it’s either melting hot or frustratingly crowded, but there are always a few places where the breeze is cool and the streets are empty. From a two-hour high-speed train ride to a full day by plane, here you won’t find shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, only 20℃ summers and the freedom to stroll and eat quietly. 01 Jinzhong | Shanxi The first time you visit Jinzhong, you’ll be amazed by its “courtyard culture.” Just the Qiao Family Courtyard alone can take two hours to explore, but ⚠️ to get photos without people, you need to be there by 8:30 AM sharp. The Wang Family Courtyard is three times larger than the Qiao Family Courtyard. If you can only pick one, I recommend Wang’s — lots of stairs, so not for the physically weak, but standing at the highest point looking over layers of gray tile roofs, you can really feel the confidence of Shanxi merchants. 🍜 Don’t eat lunch inside the scenic area. Turn off the west gate of Pingyao Ancient City to “Tianyuan Kui” for a bowl of oil-splashed noodles with Pingyao beef. The noodles are so chewy they can bounce off the back of your head. 🚄 Take the high-speed train from Taiyuan Station to Pingyao Ancient City Station, about 30 minutes per trip. A taxi from the station to the north gate of the ancient city costs about 10 yuan. 02 Beijing Tickets to the Forbidden City are hard to get during summer vacation. My route is: 🍜 Start with roast duck at “Siji Minfu” on Nanchizi Street. Dip the duck skin in sugar for a melt-in-your-mouth experience. ⏰ Enter through the Meridian Gate at 3 PM and walk to the Imperial Garden by 5 PM. The sunset turns the glazed tiles a warm orange without any editing. ⚠️ The light at Temple of Heaven Park is blocked after 4 PM, and the Echo Wall gets crowded. If time is tight, just visit Baoquan. The valley light at 5 PM is the most beautiful, and you can catch a backlit waterfall rainbow. 04 Wuhan | Hubei Wuhan summers can steam buns alive, but the breeze at Yellow Crane Tower Park is refreshing. ⏰ Go to the tower at 5 PM. Standing under the west corridor, the wind from the Yangtze River carries moisture and feels better than air conditioning. 🍜 Don’t rush after coming down. Is the long line at “Zhao Shifu fried dough with shaomai” on Liangdao Street worth it? I think so. The fried dough is golden and crispy, and inside is soft shaomai meat filling — a carb-on-carb delight. 🍜 The East Lake greenway is long. Don’t rent a bike to ride the whole way. Rent a one-way electric cart to Luoyan Scenic Area. The water cypress forest by the lake is cool and refreshing, about 5℃ cooler than downtown. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Wuhan Station, then Metro Line 4 to Yellow Crane Tower Station. No transfers needed. 05 Huzhou | Zhejiang Nanxun Ancient Town is a “budget-friendly” version of Xitang but without the noise. ⏰ After 5 PM, tour groups leave, and only local grandmas wave fans on the stone streets. 🍜 You must try “shuangjiao noodles,” soup noodles topped with eel and pork slices. We specially planned a trip with friends to Xinxiang Baoquan for a photo shoot. We purchased a two-day combined ticket in advance on Trip.com.
