The hotel is in an excellent position overlooking the sea with parking reasonably available. Our room was fairly basic but we did have a sea view and it had everything we needed. Breakfast was very good with fruit, cheeses, cereals, cakes, honey etc. There is a small terrace overlooking the sea but there is no bar service so you have to carry your drinks up to it. We saw afterwards that a glass of wine or Aperol was included in our tariff but we were not offered it and hadn`t realised. The day we left the UK the Daily Telegraph featured the hotel but we certainly paid more than the price quoted in the newspaper. #siracusa is a town on the island of #sicily and it is located on the east coast. It is really far away from Palermo - 350km and much closer to Catania airport. If you go there you will probably need to rent a car. There are many narrow streets and cathedrals around. The architecture is in the expected style for #italy #happynewyear

The joint ticket of the Parco Archaeologicodella Neapolis includes the tomb of Archimedes, the Roman Amphitheatre, the ear of Dionysius and the Greek Theatre, which is well worth a visit. The day I went, what a holiday, actually free of votes, saved 10 euros. Roman amphitheatre, the weather is serious and the scale is not very large. The arches, steps and stage that entered the theater have been well preserved. There are many tombs in the periphery of the theater, and it is impossible to know which one is the tomb of Archimedes. Going along the main road, the lush green trees along the way, a two-story lodge in the distance, especially conspicuous, and the flowers on the side are bright. The ancient Greek amphitheatre is facing the sea, standing on a high place, and can see the sea far away. Regrettably, the theater has been painted with cement, and the renovation has been as flat as the new one. It does not see the traces of history. It is really sad. Built in the 5th century BC, Sicily's largest Greek theater, 130 meters in diameter, semi-circular, 67 rows of seats divided into 9 parts, can see the stage from any angle. It is based on a large rock overlooking the city. The final tragedy of Aeschylus was staged in the theater. Every summer, classic operas are still staged here.

The Ear of Dionysius (Orecchio di Dionisio) is a large ear-shaped cave located at the end of the Latomia del Paradiso (Heaven's Quarry). The cave is 23 meters high, and its immense size is evident when you see photos of it with people for scale. The cave was named by the painter Caravaggio. Dionysius was the name of the tyrant who once ruled Syracuse. Voices inside the cave echo all the way to the outside, which is quite surprising. Even a small voice carries well. According to legend, the tyrant Dionysius used to imprison enemy captives in this cave to eavesdrop on their plots and secret conversations.

The lobby is low, but the atrium is open; the elevator is old and unstable, but the view is full of greenery; the carpet is not new, but the walls are decorated with bold murals that are a fusion of East and West. Palermo is too far away, so our three-day tour of Sicily was focused on the east coast, in Catania, Syracuse, and Taormina. On the third day, we took the Interbus to Taormina. Although you can also take the train, Taormina is built on a mountain, so the bus can drive up, while the train station is at the foot of the mountain. We paid about €10 to visit the Archaeological Park of Neapolis, and it was worth every cent. The highlight was definitely the Greek Theatre—standing there, surrounded by centuries of history, was something else. We also explored Ortigia, the old town of Syracuse, which is just a short walk away. The narrow, winding streets are full of charm, with beautiful Baroque buildings, lively piazzas, and the stunning Cathedral of Syracuse (free to enter but donations are appreciated). We enjoyed a relaxing lunch at one of the local trattorias, indulging in fresh seafood and pasta. 🍝 If you’re into nature, the nearby Vendicari Nature Reserve is a must-visit. It’s about a 30-minute drive, and entrance is free.
