This is the Beyazsu Valley, located near Mardin, a city in southeastern Turkey. It is a place with beautiful rocky mountains, and there are shops like this along the valley. I was surprised that the shops looked exactly like Neungi Baeksuk House in a Korean valley. I visited in the winter, but I heard that many people come here in the summer to cool off and eat in the cold valley water like us. Here, tranquility reigns, with serene mountains, ancient stone houses, and traces of a distant past (though we won't delve into history). I was deeply captivated by the unique charm of this city, which felt like an old ballad softly singing the passage of time. I stayed at a hotel perched on a hillside, and from my window, I could overlook the entire city of Mardin. The setting sun bathed the ancient stone houses in a golden hue, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene. The distant mountains, undulating under the sunset's glow, appeared majestic and grand. The next day, I began exploring this city known as the 'City of Stones.' Mardin's streets wind and twist, with stone houses built into the hills, layer upon layer, exuding a sense of mystery. I strolled along the cobblestone streets, soaking in the ancient and tranquil atmosphere. The locals were friendly and warm, and despite the language barrier, their welcoming smiles and gestures made me feel a strong sense of human connection. Children played and laughed in the streets, adding a touch of vitality to this ancient city. In the city center, I found a small restaurant recommended by locals and savored authentic Kurdish cuisine. Fresh vegetables, fragrant grilled meats, and various dishes prepared with local specialties were incredibly delicious, leaving me thoroughly satisfied. The restaurant owner, a kind elderly woman, not only introduced each dish's unique features but also taught me how to cook with local spices, making me feel the warmth of home. In the morning, I decided to visit the nearby Deyrulzafaran Monastery. The journey was filled with stunning scenery, with rolling hills embracing ancient villages, presenting picturesque pastoral views. Despite its age, the monastery was well-preserved and exuded a mysterious aura. I wandered through the monastery's courtyard, feeling the weight of history and the flow of time. In the afternoon, I rented a car to explore nearby villages. The scenery along the way constantly changed, from dense olive groves to steep cliffs and tranquil villages. I marveled at the magnificent landscapes surrounding Mardin, feeling the awe-inspiring power of nature. On a scenic hillside, I stopped to rest, gazing at the entire city of Mardin and the distant undulating mountains, a view so grand it left me in awe. At dusk, I returned to Mardin, admiring the setting sun as it cast a golden glow on the ancient stone houses, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene. I sat in a café, sipping Turkish coffee, watching the sunset, and soaking in the tranquility and peace. In the evening, I strolled through Mardin's streets, feeling the city's calm and serenity. The night was illuminated, yet devoid of urban noise, making it exceptionally comfortable. I sat in a teahouse, savoring Turkish tea, gazing at the stars, and feeling the peace and comfort. On my last day in Mardin, I visited the local market to experience the daily life of the locals. The market was bustling with people, and various goods were on display, exuding a strong sense of life. I interacted with the locals, feeling their warmth and friendliness. I bought some local specialties, such as handmade carpets, ceramics, and local snacks, as souvenirs of my journey. Leaving Mardin, my heart was filled with emotion. This ancient and mysterious city offered me not only beautiful scenery but also the simple folk customs and unique culture of the locals. The tranquility and peace of Mardin, its ancient stone houses, and the hospitality of its people will remain unforgettable memories. Mardin, a place that far exceeded my expectations, a place worth visiting again. This journey was not just sightseeing but a spiritual cleansing, allowing me to experience the unique charm of southeastern Turkey and the harmony between humans and nature. From its stunning architecture to its rich cultural heritage, Mardin offers an experience unlike any other in Turkey. About two hours by plane from Istanbul, in southeastern Turkey, there is a city called Mardin, famous for its stone construction. The city is formed on a rocky mountain, from which you can see the vast plains toward northern Syria (I was looking at the view while having breakfast from the terrace of the hotel). There are also several travel agencies in the area, which offer tours to nearby ruins and churches, as well as the nearby town of Midyat. Perhaps because it is close to the Syrian border, it tends to have an image of being dangerous, but when I visited at the end of 2023, the city was bustling with local tourists.

#Overseas Travel A visit to the Zinciriye Medresesi School in Diyarbakir, Turkey, was an interesting experience. This magnificent archaeological landmark dates back to the 14th century and was once a center of education and religious studies. When I entered the school, the building’s magnificent architectural beauty took me by surprise. The overlapping arcades and bursting mosaic domes were dazzling. I explored the central courtyard and surrounding rooms, and it was amazing to imagine how the students lived and learned in this ancient place. Exploring this ancient school gave my trip a sense of Turkey’s rich Islamic heritage and history. It was fascinating to learn about this important archaeological site and dive into its rich history.

Dara Ancient City, only 30 kilometers away from Mardin, has Byzantine ruins that are quasi-World Heritage-level. It mainly receives group tourists from Mardin every day, but there are very few individual tourists. It’s okay for those who have their own cars, but there are almost no poor backpackers. Why? Upon arrival, you were impressed by the beauty of the school’s unique Ottoman architecture and exquisite artistic details. We enjoyed walking through the halls of the school and seeing the magnificent buildings and inner courtyards decorated with mosaics and artistic inscriptions. You saw the cultural and artistic exhibitions located within the school and learned about the history and culture of the area through performances and art galleries. This visit was a unique cultural experience that gave us the opportunity to discover the cultural and historical heritage of the city of Mardin, and the memories of this visit will remain engraved in our memories for a lifetime.

My trip to Mardin Houses was a wonderful and unique experience. I had heard a lot about its beauty and charm, and decided to visit this beautiful historic site. Located in the city of Mardin in southeastern Turkey, Mardin Houses are famous for their beautiful medieval traditional houses. When I arrived at Mardin Houses, I was deeply impressed by the old city and the beauty of the land. The houses have a unique and exquisite architectural design that combines Ottoman, Christian, and Islamic elements. They are built of natural stone and decorated with beautiful inscriptions and ornaments. Through a home tour, I was able to enjoy a wonderful view of the old city from the balconies and windows. The landscape surrounding the city was spectacular because I could see the nearby mountains and the graded green fields. I also enjoyed traveling the streets of the old city, where I could explore more traditional sights and markets. The narrow alleys and local shops reflected a wonderful traditional atmosphere. The Great Mosque (Ulu Camii) dates from the 12th century from Mesopotamia era and is located among the narrow streets of the old city. The the building and especially its impressive minaret dominate the view the of the entire city and became a symbol of it. It is a beautiful, old and important mosque, very much worth a visit. Ulu Camii, located in the heart of Mardin Old City is believed to be built on an old church, though an arguement that could not be proven scientifically . Although the exact date it has founded is not known the numerous inscriptive plaques from Seljuk, Artuqid, Aq Qoyunlu and Ottoman periods, shows that it was probably founded in the eleventh century by the Seljuks and developed to its current state under Artuqid rule during the last quarter of the twelfth century. The inscriptions on the base of minaret announce that it was commissioned in 1176 . The building originally had two minarets one of which believed tobe destroyed during Timur's seige in 15th century The current minaret has been rebuilt in 1890 following the destruction in an in 19th century earthquake. The mosque can be visited any time, avoid prayer hours starting from noon and two more in the afternoon ask for the hours which take about half an hour . You have to take shoes off before entering, can put them on the shelves inside the mosque. The ladies are expected to cover arms and head, no shorts allowed. Alsıo Could I suggest make the effort to climb the hill behind the Mosque just as sun is rising in the morning to get the best panoramic photo shoot of the Syrian plains including the Dome of the Mosque. Just start wandering downhill from Cumhuriyet Caddesi near the middle of town to find the bazaar. Arasa Kapalı Carşi, which has been standing for about 6 centuries is one of the symbols of Mardln which its houses and historical buildings where the stone is embroidered like lace. Built 600 years ago in the Artuklu district of Mardin, Arasa Bazaar was used as a vegetable and fruit market in various periods.Spices and nostalgic items are sold in this historical market today. Mardin has a wonderful bazaar with little shops built into the city’s stone walls. Since ramping up as a popular tourist destination, many shops have evolved into little boutique shops selling beautiful crafts, high-end soaps, and trinkets. Nice shopping area, plenty of interesting shops and they didn't seem as pushy as some of the other vendors in the City. Mor Hananyo Opening Hours ⏰: The monastery is open every day from 09:00-11:30 and 14:00-17:30 Mor Hananyo entrance fee:💰 TRY 50 per person, including the guided tour Cradled in the hills just outside Mardin in southeastern Turkey, overlooking the Mesopotamian plains, the Mor Hananyo Monastery is one of the oldest monastic churches still functioning. Founded in the 5th century, the monastery has since served as a centre of learning and worship for the Syriac Orthodox Church, one of the oldest Christian communities in the world. This monastery, which was the residence of Syriac Orthodox patriarchs for 640 years until 1932, is the most visited monastery since it is close to Mardin. How to get there? Mor Hananyo Monastery is about 10 km outside Mardin by road. The best way to get here is by taxi or driving yourself. Negotiate a fare and waiting time with a taxi for your return journey, as the monastery is remote. We visited Mor Hananyo on the way back to Mardin from Dara, which was very convenient as it was on the way. Mardin is a predominantly Kurdish town in the Eastern end of Turkey, very close to the Syrian and Iraqi borders. Due to the ongoing conflict(s) in that region, it often gets ignored by foreign visitors, but those who do come will find a fascinating hilltop town with an almost unique geography, culture, great food and friendly people. It's probably best to just fly here (can be reached in around an hour from Istanbul, Ankara etc), but can be done as part of a longer trip in the region, or even via an overnight bus.
