The Ijen Volcano Complex is a group of composite volcanoes located on the border between Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency in East Java, Indonesia. Hiking is one of the most popular activities on Mount Ijen, and our tour includes the guide fee and entrance fee. We will begin the hike at 1 am. Please make sure to bring necessary hiking gear, such as headlamps, suitable sports shoes, a raincoat, and some food to keep your energy up. At Kawah Ijen, you can catch the blue fire before 4 am, so make sure not to be late, as it may not be visible after that time. However, you will still be able to enjoy a beautiful sunrise. Ijen Crater is one of Indonesia’s most remarkable natural wonders, located in East Java. This active volcanic crater is renowned for its stunning turquoise-colored acidic lake, which is the largest of its kind in the world. The lake’s vivid color is due to its high sulfur content and extreme acidity, with a pH level of less than 0.51. Standing at an elevation of 2,386 meters above sea level, Ijen Crater is part of the Ijen Plateau, a complex of volcanoes that includes several other peaks. The crater itself measures approximately 950 by 600 meters and is surrounded by steep, rugged terrain. One of the most unique and captivating features of Ijen is the phenomenon of blue flames, which can be observed at night. These flames are caused by the combustion of sulfuric gases that emerge from cracks in the crater and ignite upon contact with the air. The area around Ijen Crater is also known for its sulfur mining activities. Miners extract sulfur manually, carrying heavy loads of the yellow mineral in baskets up from the crater floor. This labor-intensive process is both physically demanding and hazardous due to the toxic fumes emitted by the volcano. I went on the famous Ijen Volcano Trekking along with the Promo Volcano Trekking in Java Island right next to Bali Island in Indonesia. I applied for the tour after arriving there and went. It is a course that starts at dawn, trekking, sunrise, and volcano viewing, and then comes down. It is a fantastic otherworldly landscape. Highly recommended!!!

We started walking up at 1 am and arrived at around 3 am. It took about 2 hours to walk on a gentle slope to a very steep slope of 45 degrees. For those who can't handle it, there are horses and cars to take you up and down. The weather depends on how cooperative the day is. When we reached the top, we couldn't go down to see the flaming lava. The wind was very strong and the fog was thick. We couldn't see the way. With such strong winds, we had to find a hole to hide from the wind. When the sky started to brighten, we were able to walk up to see the sulfur lake. This area smells very bad of sulfur. We had to wear a mask. The trees around here look like they're burned all the time, turning them black. When we got down, we saw some workers, some locals, digging up sulfur. Some people sell the mineral to tourists. Some people carve it into various shapes. Below, they can set up tents and there are restaurants and bathrooms. The Ijen volcano complex is a group of volcanoes located on the border between Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency of East Java, Indonesia. The hike to the crater needs 2-2,5 hours especially for those who are not used to hike and u will need another 30 mins to see the blue fire….There are two ways to reach to the summit. u can go there on foot or u can rent the cart…so u will just sit down and will be pushed and pulled by 2 person. The cost varies….it us around 1.2 million for return if u start from the gate . The gate is opened at 2 am and we have to show the health medical letter and the ticket costs 5K idr for local tourist and 100K for foreigner.for weekends, it cost 7.500 IDR For local tourist and 150K for foreigner . Having walked for almost 2.5 hours, i reached the summit ….yeay and hard walk pays off….i see a very beautiful and stunning scenery there….it’s worth it….. . Bromo is more accessible and suitable for people of all fitness. Sunrise view is majestic and surreal. The jeep journey through the moonscape, endless queue of jeeps lining the mountain route, the patient wait as the cloudless sky slowly brightens, and Semeru puffing every half an hour. I will revisit Bromo one day. Ijen is interesting and beautiful too and do not regret the 1.5-2 hr hiking in the dark. slope can be pretty steep and slippery due to small pebbles. wear shoes with good grip to reduce risk of slipping. the harsh environment is evident from the huge crater and Volcanic lake (pH 0.3) and smothering H2S and SO2 cloud. if you plan to stay at the crater rim, gas canister is not necessary. rent gas canister only if you want to venture down into the crater. no plans to revisit Ijen in future despite the raw beauty.
