Tsumugi
Located next to Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple, "Tsukiji Hongwanji Café Tsumugi" offers a variety of Japanese dishes, desserts, and tea beverages. Among its offerings, the most popular is the special "18-item breakfast" set. In Japanese, "item" refers to "dish," and as the name suggests, this meal includes 18 different dishes such as "yuzu tofu," "salmon roe with tofu skin," and "grilled duck with sansho pepper." These dishes are beautifully arranged on a wooden rectangular tray, creating a visually stunning presentation. The "18-item breakfast" is available in limited quantities each day. While walk-ins are possible, priority is given to guests with reservations. It is highly recommended to book in advance through the official reservation website to avoid disappointment.
The "18-item breakfast" had been on my café bucket list for a while. After several attempts to secure a reservation, I finally found an available slot about a month ago for a weekday morning at 8:30 AM. I quickly clicked the reservation button and received an email confirmation. From the moment the reservation was confirmed, I was eagerly anticipating the experience.
On the day of my visit, I was seated on a comfortable sofa. After placing my order, the meal was served in less than 10 minutes. The "18-item breakfast" set includes a bowl of white porridge, a bowl of miso soup, 14 side dishes, a serving of fruit, and a dessert, totaling 18 items. The white porridge can be refilled for free, and the set also comes with a cup of green tea, priced at 2,200 yen. The dark green dessert in the upper right corner is matcha jelly. Apart from the dessert and the fruit on the left, the rest are side dishes. The orange item beneath the matcha jelly is seaweed mentaiko, which I found quite spicy. If you’re not a fan of spicy food or are dining with children, you might want to take note of this.
Enjoying breakfast while gazing at Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple through the large floor-to-ceiling windows is a truly relaxing experience. If you love Japanese-style breakfasts, I highly recommend making this your first stop of the day.
