It is definitely the best view in Switzerland and a place where you can see the Matterhorn up close.
You can take the Groun Line bus from the Zermatt station to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and take the gondola up. The breakfast is delicious and the staff is very friendly.
The Matterhorn is right in front of the accommodation, so you don't need to go to the Gornergrat observatory.
If the weather is good, you can see the Golden Horn at sunrise.

The check-in time must be before 16:00, because if it is later, there will be no cable car to the top of the mountain. The hotel is on the mountain, opposite the Golden Summit of the Matterhorn, which has great scenery. The hotel service is very good, providing dinner and breakfast.

Don't come here is you are into apres-ski with dance and booze. Or if you like to watch TV in your room. Or going window-shopping, looking at baubles and fancily-clad tourirsts in the streets of Zermatt. You won't find either of those in the Hotel Schwarzsee. What you will find is a clean, simple room (some with shared bathrooms, ours had a private bath), Good, simple dinners (always choice between one vegetarian option and one with meat), often regional specialities (e.g. Riz Casimir, raclette, ...). Friendly personnel. The most spectacular feature is the view: Our view had views to kill for, both over the Matterhorn and over the valley, including the Gornergrat. We can't wait to go back!
