We were in the George area for a work trip and this hotel was booked for us, specifically, the Classic King room. The first red flag came when we arrived and the receptionist didn’t even look up to acknowledge me. Once we had our key, we made our way to our room, which was all way at the back of the hotel. Walking to the room, we even noticed the scent changing from a fresh beach breeze to a musty, unpleasant smell. The hotel felt eerily quiet and empty. When we finally reached our room which was literally the last room at the end of the corridor we were both shocked. The room looked like an old hostel or a rundown hospital room. The TV, telephone and air conditioner were all outdated and discoloured from years of disuse. There was a strange rusted wire hanging from the ceiling against the wall with some kind of plug attached to it. The entire room felt old, neglected and far below even a basic standard. We didn’t bother unpacking and immediately returned to reception to ask if all the rooms looked like this. The receptionist said yes. When we requested a different room, he claimed that the hotel was “fully booked.” We then said we’d be checking out and suddenly, he "found" another room. We were moved to a slightly better one. It was still not great but it was passable for a night. For context, we arrived at 20h30 so finding another place to stay would have been tricky. Unfortunately, things didn’t improve. The telephone in the room didn’t work so we had to walk to reception just to order food. We ordered calamari and chips which was overcooked. Later, I tried to shower and waited 25 minutes for the water to heat up but it never did. When I finally got into bed, I found that it was incredibly short - I’m of an average height at 1.63cm but my feet were hanging off the bed. While the bed itself wasn’t entirely uncomfortable, I struggled to stay asleep, likely because I felt uneasy staying at the hotel. The next morning, I got up with my alarm, got dressed and checked out. To make things worse, although we booked and paid for a Classic King room, we were clearly given a basic/standard one. After the room switch, a staff member casually mentioned that this kind of downgrade wasn’t uncommon for guests with darker skin tones. I was hesitant to include this but after sharing the experience with a friend, he said his parents had experienced the exact same. Regardless, this comment did not break the camels back, it was the quality of the hotel. After reading some of the positive reviews, I honestly can’t understand how anyone had a good experience here. This hotel failed in every basic way. The only upside is its location — it’s close to the beach. But sadly, that’s where it ends. Don’t waste your money or time here
