The Swan Hotel, Wells, Somerset

Staff and service very good, looked nice inside the restaurant ….Food was sparse, pie if the day, although good was small. Mash was Smash and a few carrots with gravy. Cost £18.70. Ladies toilet was blocked, used mens. Left feeling hungry as I couldn’t eat the “potato”

The room was a very decent size, nicely appointed with very good coffee and tea facilities, fluffy towels and a good temperature. Two issues with it though; the mattress was super hard so both my husband and myself were unable to get comfortable enough resulting in a very uncomfortable night's sleep. The other issue is due to the age of the hotel, there is practically no sound proofing. In the evening we were quite lucky to go to bed and actually being really quiet. However in the morning, from 7 o'clock onwards when guest started to wake up, move about and use their bathrooms etc it became increasingly noisy, both from the inside and the outside of the hotel. Our room was above the internal courtyard so around 8ish we had to listen to the guys loading empty beer kegs. Not a biggie for us as we are early risers, however if you are hoping on sleeping in a little bit you might need to reconsider. All the staff was very helpful and friendly and all areas of the hotel, including our room were very clean. The hotel is quite old and a bit tired in areas, especially the bathroom in our room where there were visible mould stains on the ceiling and around the bathtub. The hotel has a carpark but you have to navigate through some really narrow corners to get to it so keep that in mind, if your car is on the larger side. All in all an enjoyable stay and if we found ourselves back in Wells, we will probably stay again.

We are in the bar area and the food was okay and the timing of the service was not bad but the servers had such a bad attitude I certainly not rush back. They were not friendly and borderline rude. We were a table of 8 and all came aware very unimpressed.

So very disappointed. the photographs on the website are apparently for illustration only.... might not even be that hotel. If I book a room from an illustration, I expect to get that room!! If you order a red jumper you don't expect to get a green one because it was only for illustrative purposes. They have mugs which say hospitality from the heart. There is absolutely no heart . Food was at best adequate if you like poached eggs like tennis balls and black pudding like a biscuit you'll be ok.. the place is extremely overpriced, service poor. Wrote and let them know, the manager said we should have asked for him... Sorry 'NO' service should be there , otherwise its poor management! The heating cant be regulated because it's an old building. Even Travelodge have 5 foot beds , I'm pretty sure ours was small double .. Dinner bed and breakfast £350 very overpriced wouldn't waste money at any of the chain ever.

I booked a table in the restaurant four weeks prior to our visit and provided our menu choices in advance from the Xmas festive menu. When we got there was no Turkey because they had oversold the previous weekend. Free desserts were provided but this did not in any way compensate for the very poor dining service which followed. The meals served were below standard ; the service was slow to the point where we had to chase the waiters for our desserts even though the restaurant was less than half full; A fixed 10 per cent service charge was applied to the total bill. All in all a totally disappointing dining experience which was made all the worse because we had friends with us who were staying on a Christmas visit. Although claiming to be one of the oldest hotels in the country the standards of the hotel restaurant certainly do not live up to the standards one would expect.
