This hotel is a good hotel don't get me wrong I enjoyed my stay. I had a nice room dated but good. It was clean, large and in general nice. The facilities are good and the night entertainment was also good. In general staff were nice some not all. The major problems we had were solely the restaurant! We were part of a tour. Breakfast was fine but I was left absolutely fuming in the evening we had gone down for our meal slightly earlier than the 6.30 scheduled meal as soon as we went in the I assume supervisor petulantly said we were not expecting you this early we were not expecting anything but to sit down and order a drink so thought he was well out of order saying this! We then sat down at the table that were for members of the group they would not allow us to pick our own table so sat with others we did not really know. We were then ignored by the waiting staff and everyone else were served I called one of the staff over and asked if we could order food where the very rude waitress said you will need to wait for everyone else to sit down turned on her heal and left. To say I was fuming was an understatement! We arrived at 6.30 every night and never got out before 8pm absolutely ridiculous length of time. The food was not much better either braised meat or steamed fish or pie. I have worked in a care home it was that kind of food not the standard expected in a hotel and not worth the money. I would have been 100% satisfied if not for the evening restaurant! They needed a proper f&b manager ensuring prompt service and better quality food for adults and not to treat the groups as if they were cattle. Give people the choice of where they want to sit and don't take all night to serve them. This hotel is so nice let down by a poor restaurant.

If you are physically handicapped or have mobility problems, this hotel is to be avoided at all costs. The main lift to the first and second floors is smaller than the tinyest of broom cupboards and was probably one of the first hotel lifts installed by Mr Otis (it certainly cracks and creaks like it!) The Aztec Spa and pool, like the outdoor pool, has absolutely no disable access to wheelchair users who really couldn't possible use the facilities because not only are there no lifts but there are no hoists on the pools anywhere. Basically if you should have mobility issues better stay at home and go to your local leisure centre where you will undoubtedly have full disabled access!

We are still here- 1st night of a 5 night stay. We have been coming for years. Astounded that the games room now shuts at 9pm. Lots of families play bingo/ eat dinner etc and then converge on the fab games room to bowl/ play pool and snooker and use all the arcade games. A serious game changer that this now closes as soon as bingo and dinner finishes. This is a missold family activity which is highly advertised and absolutely bonkers to be frank. We won’t come again as we really enjoyed the pool

We came from the west midlands to torquay, 2 adults and 2 children aged 10 and 6. This hotel was perfect for us all. The kids always had something to do. We had 1 day of bad weather but we didnt care as there were alot to do in the hotel. My youngest (staying with me and my partner) went to the toby club and did somr clay making with matt who was lovely whilst my eldest went down to the bunker and went off with a few other children and the lady who ran the club. He loved it and we felt ok leaving him. The swimming was amazing, we went a few times, i used the sauna and steam room and loved it. Staff were lovely wherever we went. Around torquay is lovely too, we loved the crab catching which is a must to do. Overall we would definitely stay here again when we come back to Torquay.

As a group of friends we again spent an amazing weekend here, we have been coming here for 10 years now and always for a weekend break in January. We have already booked again for 2026. The Carlton is an older hotel and no not in pristine condition but for an older hotel this is to be expected, however the rooms are comfortable, the restaurant is very accommodating, even adding a different choice of vegetarian food as the one on offer was not something they liked. The staff are fantastic, friendly and helpful. Fantastic help yourself choice for breakfast and lovely 3 course meals for dinner. We used the Aztec fire and ice when we arrived of the Friday with several of us having a treatment in the afternoon. Then all 10 ladies had treatments throughout Saturday. We all had lunch in the Aztec bistro, It fair to say all of us enjoyed our break/weekend which is why we keep going back.

A 4 night break playing mahjong. Good basic food, very friendly staff, hotel clean, decor a little dated and some tender care needed in maintenance, however excellent value for money. Plenty to do for all ages. Highly recommend the spa. Fab breakfast!

Weekend break recently with a party of over 70s for the weekend from Friday until the Sunday. On arrival at 4.30 we were allocated our rooms, some doubles, some singles. On entry it was SO COLD ! I had a small heated electric towel rail on in the bathroom which I left on all the time with the door open. The radiator was not on and with every will in the world would not heat up! Did try ringing down to Reception I was on the first floor but the internal room phone did not work so had to negotiate the stairs each time as the lift was very small and slow. Was told the heating would be on at 5.00, this did not happen! In fact some of our party never did get heating. Apparently the heating system was turned off when not in use and then problems restoring it. I did eventually get mine the following day. I had one spare blanket to go between three beds, two singles, one double and summer weight duvets. The tv could only be put on at the wall and the remote did not work. On the plus side, the staff were absolutely fantastic and did their best. The meals were good. The entertainment rooms were too far for us to walk to and involved many steps. All in all I would not return as have been ill with a flu virus ever since!
