Hanare

Hanare could be described as a traditional style Japanese inn. First of all I would like to say a big thank you to Momo-san. She was friendly and helpful and lovely to talk to. She was so accomodating when we arrived early - basically just as she opened the reception and allowed us to check in early. Hanare is in the lovely area of Yanaka, a nice local area away from the hustle and bustle of the likes of Shibuya, Ginza or Shinjuku. Stroll the narrow streets, say Konnichiwa to the locals and check out the little stores and cafes. Whilst some of the facilities that you get in a regular hotel (like your own toilet or bathroom) may be lacking they make it quite clear in their listings as well as the thin walls and lack of soundproofing. They provide ear plugs to try and mitigate this and for the most part - the other people staying there were considerate of this , at least whilst I was staying there. They make up for these limitations by offering you an experience that focuses on the area and having a local experience with lovely touches like a swag bag with tenugui, a pencil and sweets. They also provide a map of the area, coupons to use the public baths and a lovely breakfast at Hagiso. Here, you have the option to have a western brekkie or a Japanese one. I went for the Japanese one it was delish. Another lovely touch was to tell you where and how they source their food and info on the playlist of music being played in the cafe and a personalised hand written card welcoming you. Rooms were spacious, clean and mattresses very comfortable. I wish I could have stayed longer (only stayed one night) so that I could have done the free walking tour they offer. It feels like the staff genuinely want to ensure to have a great stay and enjoy the Yanaka area. If you don’t mind sharing a communal bathroom and toilet then I recommend you try and stay at Hanare.
