On our cross country move from Winnipeg to Toronto, my dad and brother - who were driving separately in a U-Haul - stopped at Voyageur Motel to rest for the night. The rest of our family, with my dog, arrived later that evening in our SUV. Upon seeing my dog, immediately, the motel owner and his wife were hostile towards us. I waited with my dog and brothers outside on the stairs while my dad went into reception to book a second, pet-friendly room for the rest of our family. The motel owner berated and yelled at my dad, falsely accusing us of letting my dog into the non-pet-friendly room. He refused to hear my dad, who politely tried to explain that our dog did not enter any room and even offered to pay a higher rate for a second room. The motel owner refused, saying that we could do whatever we wanted in the room we had already booked and paid for but that he would not let us book a second room under any circumstances. We decided to leave it and left for dinner. At around 11:30pm we returned to the motel. My brothers and parents went to sleep and I decided to sleep in the car with my dog. However, I needed the bathroom and it was unsafe to leave my dog out alone as there were several drunk people loitering in the parking lot. I let my dog wait inside the room by the door while I used the bathroom. The moment we stepped in, the motel owner’s wife ran up the stairs and banged the door loudly, yelled at us, demanded we leave, and insulted my dad while he was trying to deescalate the situation. After my dog and I went into our car, the motel owner and his wife went back to the room, and while my brothers and mom were sleeping, his wife kicked the door open, switched on the lights, yelled at them to leave, and continued hurling insults. My dad tried to deescalate, begging for respect, that he would pay to have us accommodated properly, and that by refusing to let us book a second room, the motel owners effectively left us with no choice. Incredibly distressed, we decided to continue on our road trip and drive through the night - putting our lives in grave danger. We have never been so humiliated, disrespected, or traumatized. Even if wrong, no guest should be berated, insulted, and have a door of a room they paid for kicked down. We were drained and scared for our well-being. Luna is my service dog in training, she helps me cope with my anxiety and ADHD. I understand dogs are not welcome everywhere and respect business owners’ wishes. At no point did we ignore or disrespect the motel owners or their rules. We immediately faced hostility and given no chance to explain ourselves.
