Hotel Conde de Penalba
4.3/5103 Reviews
The rooms were small but nice and very clean. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The location is great as a departure point for exploring the Zona Colonial, and our room on the third floor was surprisingly quiet above the hustle and bustle of the street. Sweet little balcony too. Decent restaurant and coffee shop on the ground level (unfortunately, with a cigar factory right next door), and several excellent restaurants close by (Jalao and Buche are both highly recommended). This is not a place of great luxury, but the facility was just fine, with a great location at a reasonable price.
Hotel la Casona Dorada

My wife and I chose La Casona Dorada for our recent trip, expecting a pleasant and secure experience. Instead, our stay turned into a nightmare. On our very first night, we discovered that housekeeping had stolen my wife’s wedding ring, an irreplaceable item of immense sentimental value. Despite the hotel boasting about its security measures, including surveillance cameras, our ordeal was met with indifference and ineptitude. We immediately filed a police report, hoping to recover our cherished ring, but neither the hotel staff nor the local authorities were able to resolve the situation. The hotel’s management offered no substantial assistance, leaving us feeling vulnerable and violated. Adding insult to injury, we decided to leave the hotel after this traumatic event, yet La Casona Dorada refused to refund the remaining days of our booking. This showed a complete lack of empathy and responsibility, further compounding our distress. Our experience at La Casona Dorada has left us deeply disheartened and wary of recommending this establishment to any travelers, especially those from Europe and America who expect higher standards of security and customer service. The lack of accountability, dismissive attitude towards such a serious incident, and refusal to refund our money highlight a significant failure in ensuring guest safety and satisfaction. Avoid this hotel at all costs if you value your peace of mind, personal belongings, and fair treatment.
Boutique Hotel Palacio

This review is written 7 years later. Back in Jan 2017, I made the mistake of booking for the date of arrival. We had taken a red eye flight into Punta Cana and it was 100% my mistake that we did not actually have a -no, two -room(s) booked for ”the night before.” I still remember the great kindness we were shown by the late night/early morning hotel staff as they struggled to ready a room that was not-being-used because of shower repair issues. They changed sheets, found a roll-a-cot for our then 20-something year old daughter, and waived off all of our gratitude. And they totally moved us into the proper roomS as early as they could the next morning ... leaving us free to tourist as best as we could with our red-eye depleted energies. I am currently culling travel paper clutter, and revisiting memories. This is a fond one - my mistake was greeted with great humanity.
Gran Hotel Europa Santo Domingo, Trademark by Wyndham

Good overall location and the refurbishment since the last time I stayed is a huge eye-opener. Good to see more investments going into the area El Conde as the place was going into decline.
Rig Puerto Malecón

I stayed 2 nights upon arrival. I got to the hotel after my redeye at 4:30am. I arranged an airport shuttle via the hotel and it was easy. The room was nice, had everything I needed. The rooftop area was very pretty, with views of the sea. The bartender was very good and helpful. But what is most notable is Mr. Jean at the front desk. He was super friendly and helpful beyond what should be expected.

Due to issues with the visa documents and AA's poor service, I lost 2 nights of accommodation in Santo Domingo, a one-way AA ticket from LA to Santo Domingo, and an additional 3 nights of accommodation in LA plus additional fees. The total cost of purchasing a one-way ticket from LA to JFK and then transferring to Santo Domingo cost me almost US$1,000. What a shame! Basically, the accommodation was okay, but it happened that the hotel was renovating underground water pipes and it was very noisy during the day. Especially for my 2 nights on the 15th, it was very painful because I couldn't adjust the jet lag right away! This trip to Santo Domingo seemed to be very unsatisfactory at the beginning. It was a waste of money, not to mention that there was no one to help! Fortunately, I can speak English and finally got the documents sorted out and entered Santo Domingo 2 days late! I’m sorry that I keep talking about the unfortunate experience of this personal trip to provide travelers with reference, otherwise a beautiful trip will turn into many problems and leave bad memories. Travel nightmare. Thank you all!
