"Review of Sunway Hotel, George Town I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Sunway Hotel in George Town, and I was thoroughly impressed with its prime location, making it incredibly convenient to explore the surrounding attractions. One standout feature was the spaciousness of the room, which far exceeded what you typically find in newly developed hotels. While the decor and finishing did feel somewhat dated, it was evident that the hotel has been very well maintained, ensuring a clean and comfortable stay. Overall, the combination of a great location, roomy accommodations, and excellent upkeep makes the Sunway Hotel a solid choice for travelers."

"My wife and I stayed 4 nights here recently. Highlights: - Prime location in the heart of Georgetown—walking distance to shopping malls, eateries, and key attractions. - Reliable high-speed internet, ideal for both work and leisure. - Complimentary parking with a convenient license plate recognition system. - Warm, courteous staff who go the extra mile to assist. - Breakfast spread was impressive—varied, fresh, and satisfying. On the negative side: - Room size is quite small, which may not suit guests seeking spacious accommodation. - Unusual housekeeping policy: rooms are only cleaned once every two days, which may not meet expectations for daily upkeep. Overall Verdict: While the location and amenities are commendable, the limited room space and infrequent cleaning schedule detract from the overall experience. For the price point, it falls short of delivering full value for money."

"We booked two rooms and had an outstanding experience at this hotel. Although both rooms were the same type (21m²), Room 1615 felt more spacious than Room 1609. The location is excellent, just a short walk to the night street food market on Lebuh Presgrave, 12 minutes to Cecil Market, and 8 minutes to the 24-hour McDonald's at Birch House. There’s also a hidden bar, Good Friend Club, less than 100 meters from the hotel entrance, and another one, Magazine 63, about 10 minutes away, across from 1st Avenue Mall. Just 2 minutes away is GAMA Supermarket, which includes a small pharmacy and bakery—very convenient for anything you need. 5 min away from Komtar also. Opposite hotel is the Hin Bus Depot. The rooms were clean and the air conditioning worked well. However, the bathroom exhaust fan was quite loud (though manageable if turned off after use), and the room lighting was a bit dim—adding a floor or table lamp would be helpful. The water heater took about 3 minutes to produce hot water, which could be improved to reduce water waste. Soundproofing wasn’t the best, as I could hear the neighboring shower, but it wasn’t a major issue for me. The hotel has a gym and swimming pool @ roof top level-25, though we didn’t have time to use them. The facilities well-maintained. Overall, we had a great stay. The staff and security were friendly and welcoming. Keep up the great work and continue maintaining the cleanliness and service standards! This hotel tends to get fully booked quickly. If you want to book this Hotel, please plan and book early Will stay again when I go Penang next time."

"This is our second time stay at Gurnay Bay.. Our room was large with a lovely sea view, clean,comfortable, and the mini bar was free. The pool was good enough for fun time, our kid really loved it. The staff were friendly and helpfull. The only thing that could be improved are the TV and the wifi. Other than that, every things was great.."

"Jen Cafe : This staff team is excellent and professional. Even when the cafe was crowded, they were patient, always smiling, and worked hard to seat everyone. They truly stand out as the best team in the entire hotel. Location: Great! The hotel is close to many popular visitor spots and a variety of famous food. Front Desk: The service was just okay. Housekeeping: This needs improvement. The bed felt gritty on the first night. The staff also did not clean up properly during my stay, leaving a used cup unwashed. When I called, the local staff member who answered the phone was not so professional. breakfast is good."

"Had a lovely stay here. The room was clean, spacious, and beautifully done up, really loved the calm, cosy vibe. The café food was tasty with good portions and fair pricing. Location made it easy to get around. There was no in-room WiFi and the TV wasn’t usable due to some maintenance, but I was mostly out, so it didn’t affect me much. The staff were warm, polite, and quick to help with anything I needed. Overall, it was a comfortable and pleasant experience. Would be happy to stay again the next time I’m in the area!"

"Looking at the review of hotels in Malaysia, there seem to be tons of people giving negative reviews for almost every hotel so was pretty wary of booking this hotel and all the other ones I stayed at! However, I found that this was a decent hotel albeit with some minor problems. To start with the good. The hotel is well constructed, by that I mean the rooms and walls are made of good material so that generally sound from other rooms or outside is not an issue. This is my main concern, because you must be able to sleep peacefully or live in your room without being disturbed by neighbours or the outside, that should be the primary goal of any hotel. The room size is also very large, although I found small things like the funny diagonal shaped desk not to be practical because it was too small to use comfortably. Also, you cannot connect your laptop to the TV with and HDMI because the TV is fixed to the wall. I had some small issues with a blocked basin and the shower hose was broken, but these were resolved after a couple of visits. I needed to persuade maintenance man to change the hose, which I thought was strange as it was obviously broken. He called in housekeeping afterwards to clean up some of the water on the floor that came from the work. The cleaner used one of the body towels to wipe up the water. I said that he should at least use the floor towel and not the ones for the body. He said it was ”Just water”. As someone who is prone to eczema, I have to be careful about detergents and what I put on my skin. If this is something that house cleaning do regularly, this would be a problem for me. (I did start getting some skin issues here, but cannot say for certain it was due to the hotel). There was also some old stains on the bed sheets that I had to ask to be changed. Bed sheets like that need to be either bleached or thrown away. They may not pose any health risks but no one wants to sleep on visibly stained sheets. Also, the small sofa bench on at the foot of the bed was heavily stained and really needs to be re-furbished. The breakfast was okay. I remember the dining area which is nice, but not much of the actual food. I just like eggs, toast, fruit and coffee. The check-in is on the 20th floor, so you will probably only see the managers when you check-in and when you check-out. I had a nice Indian lady check me in. I saw one other man manager, portly Indian man, there when I tried to extend by one night, who I found to be less friendly. I would stay here again, as the problems were minor. (I also stayed at the Citadines, which I absolutely do not recommend)."

"Our first time visiting Penang, was greeted warmly by the staffs of The Granite Luxury Hotel. love the space by lobby,didn't feel overwhelmed by crowd n nice area for photo taking. Room is comfortable n clean with adequate toiletries in bathroom. My only issue is the Wi-Fi don't seems to work as well and the rooftop bar look sad n too warm to sit out. Generally a conveniently located hotel that's walking distance to lots to do and eat"

"I rarely write reviews, but my recent stay in Penang with my son was absolutely fantastic. Every aspect exceeded our expectations, from the service and room facilities to the swimming pool. The breakfast, in particular, deserves a special mention. The food quality was, without a doubt, the best I've encountered in any hotel I've stayed at in Malaysia so far. While it wasn't a traditional buffet, each dish was thoughtfully prepared with great care."

"My last stay at Ascott Gurney Penang was in Oct 2024. I travelled with a girlfriend and it was my first time staying. The experience was fantastic (the room view, the service provided, the cleanliness of the room, the pool and gym facilities etc) thus, this time I brought back my family and my in-laws to stay again (3 rooms). Was slightly disappointed this time. 1. The rooms assigned this time were not great, all low floors and the views were restricted (my last stay the room view was superb!) 2. There were lots of birds in the swimming pool area and I think the hotel should do something about it. There were droppings on the floor around the pool and after swimming for a short while, I felt uncomfortable as I could see something floating in the pool as well so I left…. 3. On the 2nd day morning, servicing staff promptly made up my room but not on the 3nd day morning. I was out between 10am to 1pm and was surprised to see that the room was not cleaned. I had to personally go down to the front desk to make the request to clean up… But overall, the service was still good, staff were courteous and helpful in general. I recommended Ascott Gurney to my husband this time, but he was quite disappointed with Ascott Gurney Penang, especially with reasons listed above and still prefer The George Penang where we stayed in end 2023 instead."
