Pingyao Tianjuan Garden Inn | The Time and Space Imprint of Ming and Qing Dynasty Shanxi Merchant Mansions
Tianjuan Garden, a deep courtyard residence favored by time. This 5.7-acre Ming and Qing Dynasty ancient building was once the glorious mansion of the wealthy Jig family in Pingyao. Now, as a key protected historical building, it stands quietly between the hustle and bustle of West Street and the tranquility of the ancient city.
【A Courtyard Encompassing Past and Present, Every Step Reveals Splendor】
Nestled against the cultural landmark Pingyao Film Palace to the north and adjacent to the bustling pedestrian street to the east, it is within easy reach of the Rishengchang Draft Bank and the County Government Office. To the west, the ancient city gate is in sight, and just beyond the city lies the "See Pingyao Again" theater. The high walls and black tiles shield from the outside world. Stepping inside, it feels like falling into a dream where past and present interweave.
【Twenty-Six Rooms, Twenty-Six Kinds of Elegance】
The guest rooms are scattered among the three-story embroidered-lattice pavilions, Tianhe Courtyard, Qifeng Courtyard, and Fulu Courtyard. Each room is furnished with Ming and Qing Dynasty antiques, while modern amenities flow through the carved window frames. The Red Thread Pavilion's hidden connections, the tea and ink aroma of the multi-functional hall in the central courtyard, and the aroma of Shanxi cuisine in the restaurant all narrate the "wealthy and refined" lifestyle of the Shanxi merchants.
【Architecture as Epic, Details as Wonders】
The layered eaves are like a frozen epic of the Shanxi merchants. The carved brackets and screens in the brick and stone work reveal the artisans' devotion. Despite centuries of wind and rain, the weathered beams and pillars still exude the former opulence - every brick and tile here tells of the merchants' ambition and composure to "dominate the world's trade".
【Leisurely Stroll Through the Four Seasons, Every Angle a Picture】
In the morning, climb the observation deck to watch the smoke rise from the ancient city's black tiles. At dusk, lean on the railing and watch the setting sun gild the eaves. In the courtyard, the shadows of flowers dance on the walls, and koi fish play in the water. A pot of tea and a game of chess are all that the former owner enjoyed in his "slow world".
——Staying at Tianjuan Garden, you are not just staying at an inn, but half of Pingyao's history.

It was Women's Day, and it was another Saturday and Sunday. My wife and I took a break from our busy schedule to visit Pingyao Ancient City. We booked this hotel online. From the moment we booked, the hotel manager contacted us. Meeting us at the high-speed rail station was a pleasant surprise. We also gave my wife flowers for Women's Day (though I hadn't already given her one) and a beautiful jewelry box as a souvenir. This stay was absolutely perfect! The service was impeccable, from the front desk to the housekeeping staff. The rooms were spacious and bright, well-equipped, and the bedding was soft and comfortable. The hotel's location is also fantastic (right in the heart of the ancient city). Both the amenities and the service were top-notch. Every detail was meticulously thought out, and they were always ready to help. (The tour ended at 10:30 PM, and the hotel manager was waiting ten minutes early to take us back to the hotel.) It was an impeccable stay and I highly recommend it to any discerning traveler! This hotel completely exceeded my expectations!

I compared many hotels online and chose this one. After placing my order, a housekeeper contacted me. The pick-up and drop-off service was fantastic. I didn't even have to carry my luggage; the front desk guy helped me along the way. Everyone else was incredibly welcoming, making it feel like home. The hotel's setting is an antique courtyard house, giving it a time-travel feel and a sense of history. The room amenities and cleanliness were excellent. Xiaodu turned off the lights and curtains, and the room also had an automatic toilet, a humidifier, and a small refrigerator (with free drinks). Breakfast was buffet-style with a wide variety, and the beef, bowl tray, and kuoluoluo were delicious. The location is just over 100 meters from Ming and Qing Street, making it very convenient for commuting. I'd definitely stay there again!

CCrystalismThis hotel is in a prime location on Main Street, right next to the famous Cheng Huang Miao temple. It offers both convenience and a sense of seclusion. Despite my room being near the main entrance, I experienced no noise or disturbances.
The hotel arranged a seamless transfer from East Gate, where vehicles are permitted, to the temple, followed by a short 50-meter walk to the hotel. This service, included in the hotel package, made the arrival process effortless. Communication via WeChat and assistance from my tour guide ensured a smooth transfer both in and out. They also provided luggage assistance, which was one of the reasons I chose this hotel.
The owner… or at least, I assume he is was incredibly friendly, informative, and helpful. He provided useful tour information and even gifted a bottle of vinegar upon departure.
Only one exception that language might be a barrier if you totally can’t speak Chinese - but fret not there’s always translator tools.
The room was very comfortable and appeared newly renovated, with excellent pillows and a cozy comforter. Both the room and bathroom were clean. Amenities included disposable towels, essential toiletries, and a powerful hairdryer.
We didn’t have any food here as our room didn’t come with it but that’s fine, there are plenty of options in Pingyao which you should go out to try.
As a frequent guest of Marriott chains (which means I have certain level of expectations), I had to explore local options since there isn’t one in Pingyao. This hotel met my expectations, and I highly recommend it to both local and international travellers. For the reasonable price and excellent location, I have no complaints, except that I wish I had stayed two nights instead of one!
AAReally nice place, but as for most hotels, you cannot expect the staff to speak English (not a problem for me, but if you don't speak any Chinese be prepared). Location is great as it is around 2 minutes walk from 南大街/South Street and all the main museums and courtyards. The owners were very friendly and helpful, making time to explain all the places to see and were to eat. They can even help with good discounts, e.g. for the historical-themed performance '又见平遥'/Encore Pingyao as well as for restaurants.
The hotel is in a beautiful traditional courtyard, very quiet area so you will sleep well at night. The room has traditional furniture, adding to the atmosphere, and while small (but good value for the price) was comfortable. The bed is a so-called 'kang' with heating - it was so comfortable in the cold winter that it was hard to get out of bed in the morning! Part of the floor has heating too. The cleanliness is good too. I would really recommend this place, very good atmosphere and with everything you need to be comfortable.
GGuest UserOur kids absolutely loved it! It truly felt like stepping into an immersive Jin merchant's compound. The lanterns lit up at night created such a magical ambiance! The location is also very convenient. Huge thanks to the host for the excellent travel tips and delicious food recommendations. We also joined a guided tour to visit the various museums in the ancient city. Even when we checked out two hours late, the host was so considerate, asking if we needed more time to rest! Overall, a truly wonderful experience!
GGuest UserWhat a pleasure to stay here! The location in the Old City is beautiful and interesting, with a benefit of being easy to find. The owners have a wonderful service attitude, and tried to help me with all my little issues. My room was cozy and quiet, sloping roof meet the eaves with a courtyard view. The owners offer railway station pick up, but if you end up taking a taxi, direct the driver to the north gate.
KK Hoffman (Canada)Fantastic ancient Chinese lodging with modern amenities. You get the chance to sleep on a Luohan bed. The room is a suite!
Within Pingyao walled city, it was easy to go to visit the sites. The lady owner gave me a map. Even though I speak no Chinese and they speak no English, we were able to communicate using a translator app. She recommended a restaurant when I asked.
They made the utmost effort to make your stay enjoyable. The owner took me to the railway station when I left.
P.S. Best to download MAPS.ME as it will work offline. Google Maps does not work in China. The taxi will drop you outside the city wall and you can ride the shuttle to the hotel. Make sure you got the Chinese address. Also same possible, install the Wechat app as it is used widely in China - you text in English they translate to Chinese and vice versa.
GGuest UserFirst of all: the owners get a 10/10. they are an old couple, super sweet and try to give you the best stay as possible. They cannot speak English which led to a laughing moment as they where translating Chinese into Spanish which we cannot speak.
A few things to consider: the rooms are small which is usually super okay for us. We don’t need much room and price as well as location was great. It still became a bit of an issue in our situation as it was pouring rain and the rooms is directly entered from the outside area. There is no space to leave wet shoes outside or much space to hang wet clothes. So this might not be an issue if you visit in summer. It really depends an is an subjective view.
The reason for a lower rating of cleanliness is, that the first room, they gave us, was spelling so bad that the first thought was „good that we only stay for one night“ and the second „how will we be able to get this out of our clothes“. We are backpackers…
After we when through the old town, we came back and the lady must have noticed our discomfort and asked if we would like to change the room. We did so as the second room was still smelling a bid old but totally acceptable for the ancient building. The room was much better even though there was still dust on some of the desks so we wipes it first before putting stuff on it.
Again, 10/10 for the kind and friendly hosts. On a sunny day, the experience might have been positive on all the topics but we have to be honest…
GGuest UserI checked various rankings and chose Delian. I still like newer hotels, and I was not disappointed.
Pick-up station: The B&B can pick you up at the station, so you don’t need to look for it with your luggage. It feels really good. We booked a two-night stay and were offered a drop-off at the station. When the guy saw it was snowing, he kindly helped us carry our suitcases to the entrance of the high-speed railway station, so we didn't have to climb the stairs ourselves. Very heartwarming!
Room: The hotel has floor heating. The staff preheated the room in advance, and it felt warm as soon as you entered the room. There is air conditioning and an electric heater in the house, so it doesn't feel cold even when it snows. The yard and the room are very clean, which is the feeling I like. Although the room was not cheap, it was worth it.
Service: All questions were answered. The waiter and a short-haired lady were both very nice. The recommended restaurant is also very cost-effective.
I'm glad I chose Delian.
MMIHAELATraditional inn style hotel, just as you enter the old city. I stayed in a typical stone bed with futon mattress, initially I was stressed I cannot sleep.well but it was perfect. Another plus is the heated japanese style toilet and the breakfast across the street at two local ladies. Cannot get more authentic than this. They offer free driving to the railway station (high speed in my case), which it came as a pleasant surprise as I was not aware of. Highly recommend for simple, authentic local experience 🙂
JJeffery.truongThe ancient city Pingyao and the Yundingxuan hotel blowed our mind. The hotel provide free pickup from the train station. We took the high speed train arrived at Pingyaocheng station which is around 15 minutes away from the ancient city. When you enter the city wall gate, you will be amazed of the narrow streets and cobblestone road. Picked Yundingxuan hotel because it was closed to the North gate so
If the taxi was to dropped us off it’ll be a short walk but the driver dropped us off near the hotel because cars are not allowed within the main streets.
The hotel is closed to 200 years old and have characteristics of the Ming and Qing dynasties. I was born in Vietnam,
With roots to China but raised up in the US since I was 7 years old. I’ve seen Chinese movies but nothing will prepare you to the hotel and the ancient city. I was surprised how big the hotel complex was. All the staff were very nice, the main host spoke English, and the breakfasts were traditional Chinese breakfast. We stayed two nights and we felt safe throughout our visit. My wife and daughter appreciated the three hotel cats and all the felines throughout the city.
I’m sure the other hotels are fantastic and will give your a unique experience but I can vouch for Yundingxuan. Just be prepared to get out your comfort zone but be amazed by the visual and taste of Pingyao Ancient City.
AAnonymous UserWe ended our five-day trip to Shanxi and were very satisfied with Shanxi, especially this B&B in Pingyao Ancient City. After booking the room, we contacted the inn and reserved a parking space for us. We got off the expressway and arrived at the parking lot smoothly, and someone came over. They were very considerate in picking up my luggage. The location of the inn is very good, just at the intersection of the pedestrian street. It is not noisy at night and is very convenient for traveling. This is the most recommended one. The inn is a typical Shanxi courtyard house, just like living in a TV series. The courtyard is very comfortable, the rooms are clean and hygienic, and the service is excellent. I recommend everyone to stay here.
