The Tontine Hotel

Stopped by for breakfast. For some inexplicable reason non residents are banished to the lounge although the restaurant was virtually empty. Low quality ingredients on the plate, worn decor but at least served at a moderate cost by a pleasant member of staff. Like so many small Scottish hotels, tired and average.

We have stayed at the Tontine for many years whilst on our annual golf trip, I must say this has been our most disappointing visit to the hotel. Since it changed ownership a few years ago the standards and selection of the food especially seems to have gone down hill. To be fair they did have a major issue in the kitchen with their gas and on our first night we had to eat in the Crown pub which is across the road, this was by far the best meal we had and if we had been given the option we would have eaten there for our entire visit but as we were on a dinner package we had to eat at the hotel. The menu over the last few years has been to say the least streamlined, several meals had to be sent back due to the poor quality and lack of taste. Once again to be fair they did warn us that any steaks ordered due to the kitchen issues may not be cooked properly but having said that the quality of the steak seemed very poor. Breakfast was also a bit of a let down with under cooked poor quality sausages and the scrambled eggs seemed to vary from day to day. Now for the positive the staff are excellent from check in to check out they could not do enough for you, the rooms are kept spotlessly clean and anyone wanting to play golf they will sort out all your needs. We would like to make a special mention to Jess one of the waitresses, she went above and beyond. Good luck to her on her new adventures when she goes off to university. Hopefully our visit this year has been just a blip and the standards could be brought back to the previous level.
