The room is simple and elegant, clean and tidy, warm and romantic. The butler-style service is meticulous and makes people feel at home. The hotel has an excellent environment, embedded in a wonderful hillside, surrounded by trees and green grass, with cattle and horses roaming behind it. The Western-style breakfast is delicious and hearty, and the service is attentive, making people forget to leave.

This is a country house hotel, the house looks older than it is (it is 19th century I believe built on the site of an earlier house, the estate is much older). The area is rural but the nearest town (Peebles) is just a few miles away and the drive from Edinburgh Airport was around half an hour. The rooms in the main house are large and elegantly furnished, there are several small bar areas and a spacious lounge (this kind of thing is important in Scotland, when one must expect some rainy days, having a comfortable room plus some attractive public areas in which to spend time is helpful). The hotel's grounds are very attractive, with a walled garden and lots of plantings along the walks inside the estate. The undoubtedly high cost of maintaining this type of property when there are only 14 or 15 rooms is reflected in the price, but for this kind of experience we were happy to pay it. The on-site restaurant, a beautiful dining room, offers a prix fixe dinner only-it was well prepared and presented and we enjoyed it very much, but I don't think there is an à la carte menu and the food was fairly rich (think venison, excellent fish, ham), we were attending a function our second night so only ate in the hotel once. Lunch has more conventional offerings. There is obviously a very accomplished chef and anyone staying here should use the restaurant at least once, it is of course the best in the area. Staff were very welcoming and the owner came in during dinner to introduce himself. There are not so many of this kind of country hotel left, and I hope this review may encourage someone to try it.

We have stayed here several times and have never been disappointed. The service is top notch and the food is superb. I can’t recommend this hotel highly enough.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, but unfortunately, their warmth couldn’t make up for a hotel that clearly lives in the shadow of its former glory. The property has not seen meaningful renovation in many years, and the overall quality of the stay fell far short of the high prices charged. It was evident that the hotel is trying to compensate for its many physical shortcomings with enhanced service touches, such as turndown service. However, the result felt more like a well-meaning but chaotic episode of Fawlty Towers than a luxury experience. There is a clear mismatch between price and quality, and sadly, we cannot recommend this hotel.

My wife and I celebrated her birthday at our very favourite hotel. We were greeted with a wonderful welcome by the Dream Team. The staff are friendly, polite and always go the extra mile to make your stay so relaxing and enjoyable. We always stay at Cringletie for our birthday and anniversary celebrations. The food, service and comfort have been maintained at a very high standard over recent years. The owners are also very welcoming and always make a point of meeting their guests at dinner times. The grounds and walled garden are very kept. We look forward to our next stay this year. Congratulations to everyone at Cringletie for making it a must return to gem in the borders. Best wishes Ian and Marion.

Had a great weekend stay at the Cringletie House. Grounds were beautiful and we really enjoyed getting out and exploring and playing the available games on the lawn. Room was beautiful and the food was extraordinary. My wife is gluten free and all of the meals (including welcome biscuits) were tailored to be gluten free. All gluten free items were just as delicious as the "normal" meals on the menu. If you do not rent a car be aware that taxis in the area are cash only.

We held our intimate wedding ceremony at Cringletie, with us and our 6 guests, and it was the perfect location. We stayed for two nights in the Selkirk Suite which was fantastic, spacious and beautifully decorated. The food served at both of our dinners was absolutely delicious and the restaurant team went out to their way to cater for our various dietary requirements. The whole team at Cringletie who organised everything and looked after us were excellent. The gardens and surrounding countryside is beautiful. We feel that Cringletie is a real ‘hidden gem’ . We loved it there and can’t wait to return.
