I am a local resident. We visited the bar for drinks and food which we do from time to time due to the sea view and garden. I have refrained from leaving reviews in the past however I fail to understand why after the takeover and refurbishment, core service issues are not being addressed to meet the expectation of a five star location and reflect the premium prices. Food and Drinks are more expensive than any other place in North Berwick. However, the service, atmosphere and quality are not reflective of the high prices. We ordered drinks at the bar, where a staff member did not realise we were standing as they had their back to the tables and they were on their phone completely oblivious. Other than that the staff were reasonably attentive when at the bar however there does seem to be lack of efficiency presumably due to training and the bar area both inside and out appeared messy and the bar itself had two particularly unappetising and unclean water dispensers on it. There was a circuit class on in the garden with very loud music, the music was not such an issue as the blaring ‘horn like sound’ every 30 seconds for the participants to move on the next station. It completely took over the garden and emptied the garden area for drinks. And with the hot weather, most rooms seemed to have their windows open, so I wouldn’t like to think about having a relaxing evening in one of the bedrooms with a class like that going on. I asked the server if they were still serving food, to which they responded that they would check with the kitchen. They informed me they would be serving food but were out of two of the items on the (already very limited) menu. I browsed the menu where the only other thing I would have chosen to eat was a £22 mushroom risotto. Due to past dining experiences there I have never felt that the prices are reflective of the quality of food served therefore, I chose not to order the risotto and went elsewhere instead. So cannot comment on the food on this occasion. Overall, this just summarises one bad experience. However, an accumulation of recent bad visits have really put me off and feel that the views cannot make up for the lacking standard of service. I hope to see an improvement so that we may return to enjoy the beautiful building and surroundings.

I am a North Berwick resident and we went for an evening drink to enjoy the location and sit out in the garden for a couple of drinks. Not been to The Marine for years. Will not be back. Our focus was clearly just on bar drinks. The bar staff training in hospitality was amateurish to say the best. They started by telling us what beers we couldn't drink because they couldn't poor the properly (dispense issue). We said we were sitting out in the garden and they said 'well we can't bring drinks outside'. For the premium price and the premium status I would have expected them to do this. We were also told we couldn't have our beer in the correct branded glass because they didn't have any clean ones. If the two staff in the bar had put in the slightest effort to clean the 42 glasses on the bar and collect the glasses left on the out door tables they would not have had a problem. The general cleanliness of the bar was poor. I have had better service and seen a bar in a better condition in bars and pubs at the opposite end of the premium scale. As we were leaving an elderly couple were arriving with suitcases and struggling up the entrance stairs whilst the reception staff looked on. Shocking!

The pillows and the beach access are the only redeeming features at this newly refurbished hotel. It certainly is not five star. Take a look at how it’s done in Fairmont, Old Course Gleneagles Balbirnie Having visited pre Covid we expected the same high standard and comfort. We took along some friends and we were really disappointed in the service offered over the three days. The cold austere spa is the worst I have ever used No soft lighting , no warm welcoming room.then the quiet rest area so dark the magazines could not be read.!!! Austere and cold but my facial was a delight.Felt like a public baths . A few lessons could be taken from the afore mentioned hotels.

Anniversary break in this iconic hotel. Room was facing golf course and front lawn with the lovely sea view. A wedding was taking place and guests were playing pitch and putt late into the evening outside the window. The room is large but has a tired decor and the bathroom really needs to be upgraded soon. Staff were lovely and the breakfast was good with a nice selection of continental and hot served food.

Beautiful hotel in a stunning location. We had a really large room but our friends room was a lot smaller. All the staff were very pleasant especially the lads behind the bar but we did experience a few issues whilst having dinner in the bar (plates and glasses not being taken away etc.). But the food was excellent and we all really enjoyed our stay there.

Very expensive but a nice hotel looking over a golf course touched by panoramic sea views. Breakfast ok had better and didn’t have evening meal as always back later in the evening. Price a big factor here but for my purposes there are better cheaper options elsewhere in east lothian.

I had a lovely stay at the Marine Hotel. The staff were absolutely amazing and I couldn’t have had a better stay! The views from our room overlooking the beach made the stay even better. Would definitely recommend this hotel and we will be back!

Walking out the hotel gate down to the first tee is an experience that is hard to beat. Stayed here in 2018 and again last week, the new lobby is incredible and the staff made it feel like a small boutique hotel. They had our 12 sets of clubs waiting every morning and catered to every need our group could through their way. From the moment the front desk greeted our group to the team at the spa, everyone went out of their way to make us feel at home
